Gothic's look good but the whole controls thing scares me a bit. .

Your loss...

The controls can be challenging at first but you get used to them quickly and actually begin to appreciate them later on.

Try them and you will not be dissapointed.

I might just do that. If it's in the same class as Morrowind then I will have to...eventually.

Moria/Rogue - Wow, back to the ASCII days.

Uh, anyone who thinks NWN is a good RPG, well...

Planescape: Torment is the best story-driven RPG ever, hands down.

My list would include Ultima VII, both parts, Ultima Underworld, Fallout, Gothic, Arx Fatalis, KotoR... and after that I consider the rest 2nd tier.

Well I just started playing The Bard's Tale and I just have one thing to say...FVSKING SAVE POINTS! Who the hell does save points these days??? Nothing more idiotic, irritating and useless in a game...nothing more capable of annoying your players. Why oh why do they make you walk across a map for 20 minutes just to save?

sometimes save anywhere can actualy kill a game, especialy on RPG's. being able to save/reload every fight takes all the challenge away.

Arcanum -- of Steamworks & Magick Obscura

Best RPG i've played, since it is non-linear and allows you to pretty much do whatever you want.

Next-up is an oldie, but it was wild at the time: Battletech - Crescent Hawk's Inception

Deus Ex: Invisible War is neither an RPG nor Deus Ex 2. I refuse to even believe it's actually from the same line of games. It's an FPS with choices, but it lacks the true RPG elements which DX1 had: a skill system, an inventory system, and actually being made to care about the character you are playing as. FarCry is a better RPG hybrid than DX:IW

DX1, however, is solid gold. That's how a hybrid should be. It's also way easy to mod. If you get at all addicted to it and want more I can point you to a few standalone mods, along with my own ruleset mod. (This invitation goes out to anybody reading this too. Even if it's 2 years after this was posted and you're reading this in the archives)

If you can dig up an old-school gaming rig or get DOSBox running on your system I also recommend Callahan's Crosstime Saloon. It's a point-and-click adventure game -- based on the same-named book series by Spider Robinson -- which is the funniest thing I've ever played. Ever. Seriously.
