I am having problems with the Windows Me upgrade from 98, so I am fixing to reformat my hard drive. I have tried reinstalling windows me but it gives me some file errors and won't let me reinstall it. I have Windows 95a and b, Windows 98 and 98se, and the upgrade to me. Which one is the best to install on my computer after I reformat? Is there anyway to do a clean install with windows me without installing 98 first? I have already backed up all of my files, about 6 cds worth of stuff.

Hmm, just found the poll about this same topic so I will just look through it.

I have found that win98se works best on most computers. However some (usually older) computers don't work correctly with 98se (NICs don't work at all) and ME usually fixes those problems, but is generally less stable on average.

So my suggestion is that you try 98se and if it gives you problems then try ME. You should just be able to install ME by typing setup.exe from DOS...

I prefer Win98SE. I found that WinME eats up system resources like ants at a picnic. Further, there are just too many programs I want to use that aren't WinME compatible. And WinME isn't a good enough reason for me to shell out extra money for the latest versions of Partition Magic, WinFax, etc.

Yup, win98se will do but my favorite among your selection is win95b as long as you don't have usb peripherals (95b has usb support but not as good as 98se). I've seen less blue screens with 95b than with 98se.

Well, I have just finished loading 98se on my computer along with all the drivers. I am currently getting all of my other programs loaded back on.

Thanks

It's an issue of personal hygene. I felt so much better after replacing ME with SE: the former had truly defiled my system and made me feel cheap, solving nothing, costing too much, and making trivial-if-irritating MS tasks even worse. My self-respect is higher and everything runs faster now that I've reverted.

Out of those choices, definitely Win98SE. If you threw Win2k into the mix, that would be my pick indefinitely :)
