🙂Hi there

I currently have a RADEON X800 XT Platinum Edition card and would like to upgrade. I dont really want to upgrade my mobo yet though so PCI is really out of the question and so I am looking for the best AGP card money can buy (reasonably!). Is it worth me upgrading? Any suggestions?

Cheers Guys!

no. it is not worth you upgrading at all. the only faster non overclocked AGP card available (and most probably that will evere be available) is the X850 XT PE, this card is only marginally faster than yours.
No point whatsoever.
Are your games feeling slow?

Hi there

thanks for that. My games arent particulary slow. I think I have a reasonable spec with my card, an Athlon 64 4000+, 1024 (Value) Ram. I'm just in that position now I think where my next upgrade will be the biggy. ie new mobo and card and maybe Ram. Hell, may as well buy a new computer.

Are PCI cards the norm now or do they still need to 'settle down' a bit...?

they are the absolute norm. i dont think ATI or Nvidia will be producing any more AGP chips. Yours is the fastest native AGP chip ever made (for desktops). the X850 card that i mentioned is actually working with a chip to bridge AGP and PCIe.
I personally in your position would wait until there is a bigger performance gap. before you upgrade.
although you can certainly change the motherboard and graphics card to PCI express and keep the CPU (that wont hinder you for a long time). if you are upgrading then i would not upgrade to anything less than a 7800GTX or X1800 XT (the gt and XL versions respectivley are not a great purformance leap away).
If i had to upgrade right now i would choose the following
Opteron 170/180 dual core chip (this is not your usual server chip, and its cheap)
X1800XT
A good power supply from OCZ 500/550watt
at least 2 gig of ram
320 gig western digital drive or maxtor drive with 16mb cach
from your possition i would not get any thing less than this
