i couldn't pick just one game and call it the best, so instead i'd just download (i mean purchase ) a few of the good ones.

Rune isn't half bad. The game uses the Unreal Tournament engine so the graphics are awesome! Just make sure you download the v1.01 patch or you'll be stuck like I was close to the end. The patch doesn't trash your old save games either.

I think NOLF is the best of the current crop. It is really a pleasant surprise, and makes for a nice change after months of nonstop Counter-Strike.

I'm playing BG2 right now... like you, i was addicted to EQ too. I'm playing BG2 with my girlfriend, since i can't stand playing games alone now. BG2 addictiveness is nothing compared to EQ though, so you should be safe.

Personally, i'm waiting for Horizon or UO2 to come out.

I just downloaded the Sacrifice demo and it's REALLY fun, especially if you like FPS/RTS games like Battlezone. That and American McGee's Alice are both on my Xmas list. =)
I would have to give BG2 a definite THUMBS UP. It kicks so much ass. True it's not exactly the most cutting edge game out there and will probably tax your system just slightly more than MS Word, but man, the storyline is FANTASTIC and the gameplay is phenomenal. It'll give you some 2 billion hours of playtime too, give or take.

if you want a game with a more arcade kinda feel to it, definately get tony hawk 2. it's a great game, although you can tell it is a console game, because it is rather short and doesn't take very long to master.

serious sam demo has been gettin a quite good reputation for what i know...

As far as demos go, I HIGHLY recommend Deus Ex. It is a VERY long and fantastic demo.
