What is the best MS operating system to have?

Hi there, I have all flavours of Windows and have installed all of them in the past because I format my computer on a frequent basis. I have been longest with win98 because it is tiny in terms of installation size and relatively conservative about throwing bloatware on to my harddrive. However, I'm growing less satisfied with win98 by the day because it have a tendency of crashing after a couple of months of usage even after numerous fresh formats.

I tried WinXP as well but didn't like the size of the installation and for some reason, I have a lot of difficulties of having my hardware playing along with the OS. I'm not interested in Win95 or ME either, because the former is too old and the latter always crash with my computer setup even right after a format!

I'm thinking about Win2K, but want your opinions on this OS. Or I will have to stick to win98.

Thank you for help in advance!

I am personally happy with Win2kPro... I've been thru the Win95/98se craze, as well as used ME fer some odd reason that I cant ponder at the moment (must have been all of that drinking 😉)
Ive also tinkered with XP pro, but as you have noted, have discoverd the excessive 'bloatware' all too common to XP users... For my personal uses (college, games, networking, etc) Win2kPro is the best for myself, and I am more then happy with it... If your an everyday schmoe that just wishes to check the stocks online whenever possible, perhaps staying with 98 is just fine... IT all comes down to what is needed by the user...

I am happy with W2K Pro after many years of Win98SE and I am sure you will have few crash/corruptions with W2K Pro after first few months then it will be more stable than ever.

I am not ready for XP Pro because I have some hardwares that is not support by XP...like UMAX Scanner why bother to buy another scanner if I am happy with scanner?

Win XP has some nice features, but I've been happy with Windows 2K since it was released. XP is a little too silly looking for me.

Alll of them suck, and all will crash somehow sooner or later, but Win2K has to be the best of the bunch. It plays all the games I want, with XP based on the 2K core, devels are gonna be supporting the kernel more, and it doesnt have any of the bloat that XP has. The win9x series are super prone to crash so those go out the window. XP is spyware so... your basically left with 2K 🙂.

anywayz,

Linux is the way to go hehehe.

I recommend W2K. Its just that little bit better if you are concerned with stability. Of course if you are REALLY concerned with stability you won't be using anything M$ created.

If the glitz and flash of XP pro is just irresitible, then you can't go horribly wrong by choosing it. I have never used a M$ operating system until at least the first SP came out.

So, if you have to have the newest shiniest OS, then by all means use XP pro. Otherwise use W2K and dual-boot if there are some games that you just can't live without.

Personally I can't stand 9x, while I like almost all NTs (NT 4.0 for older systems, 2000/XP for newer).

From some of the things i've read, i guess i'm one of the few that have been happy with Win98se. Of coarse, Win95 is the only thing i can to compare it to.

I've heard M$ will be dropping support for 98 soon(anyone know about that?) & i've also been wondering about a possible new computer with 2k or XP. I wonder how long they'll be supporting 2k?

Win2k Pro isnt exactly a light install either. If you have to fork out the dough for a new OS, might as well go with the latest for the longest support cycle.

I personally think that XP has done nothing but build on 2000, so I say go XP Pro (Home is ok too provided u dont need to be able to log into a 2000/NT4 domain.

I upgraded to Win2000 as soon as it was released and absolutely loved it. I don't know how anyone could stick with 98 for so long as the NT-based MS OS's are far superior to the 9x series. Win2000 was rock solid for me and worked great. However, it didn't have the best game support (at least at first) and was more finicky with certain hardware.

I upgraded to WinXP as soon as it was released and absolutely love it. WinXP is even more stable on my system than Win2K was. I have never had a blue screen that was not related to too much overclocking. I can run XP for weeks without even a restart while really running the system hard. I actually really like all the interface tweaks (like the collapsing system tray) and all the included bloatware as some have said. The new media player is much better and I feel networking is improved.

So I would say go with XP!!!!!!

IMHO, Windows 2000 Professional sucks the least.

Exactly. I hate Windows in all of its forms, but for those rare programs that don't work in WINE and are good enough to justify the ~300 MB of RAM that VMware uses, I use Windows 2000.

I prefer Windows XP, since it supports my hardware better than Win2k, but if you like the stability of an NT-based OS, but find WinXP too bloated, Win2k Pro would be perfect for you!
