What is the best mp3 encoding dll? LAME, Blade, Xaudio???
Im gonna start a project trying to construct an mp3 encoder using one of the dlls. Wondering which ones the best?

Please only reply if you know what im talking about and if you know anything about mp3s and sound.

To answer that question, I suggest you check out r3mix.net. According to their in depth analysis, they say it's an older version of LAME that works best. You should read the pages if you really care.

I like LAME alot better than Blade, and I personally slightly prefer it to Fraunhoffer (sp?) though I saw some tests somewhere and I seem to recall that Fraunhoffer was the most accurate, LAME being second and Xing the least.

I'll see if I can find that review for you.

From my experience, the LAME encoder is the best one around if you want to use VBR. I've tested and compared (perhaps not that in-depth but anyway) several of the most popular ones (Fraunhofer, Xing, LAME...) and have come to the conclusion that the LAME encoder @ 192Kbit VBR suits me best. The best quality vs space ratio of them all.

Still, all ears are different. I really think you should try them all yourself and see (hear) which one you like best. You know, sometimes all the graphs tell you that x is better than y but you still feel that you like y the most.

Promise you will post your encoder if you manage to construct one. :)

One more time - LAME is the best. All the others are "lame" in comparison. Plus I don't think any of the others will let you use their source code or .dll's for free.

Don't use DLLs, they're a just a hack. Use the backend of LAME for the best possible speed/compression/quality ratio :)

I use Cool Edit 2000 for my audio editing, and this is what they say:

"Cool Edit uses the Fraunhofer-Thomson compression scheme, which is the original and highest quality MP3 compressor available."

"Use the backend of LAME" what do u mean the actual code to write my own? if so, im not that experianced, what im doin is using the functions in the lame dll to encode mp3s, a friend is helping me writte some, another dll which simplifys the creation of the mp3 (in c++), and a gui (in vb).

<< Fraunhofer blah blah ... which is the original and highest quality MP3 compressor available >>

So they lie. I'm sure they aren't going to include LAME, it's free, so they can hardly charge you for it. Scientific tests prove LAME is better than Fraunhofer.

I used Blade and Fraunhofer for a while. Lame sounds better than Blade and better than Fraunhofer from 160 up. Just as good at 128.
