Fraunhoffer. Audioactive Recording Studio is the best of the encoders. Audioactive Player is the mp3 player with the best sound-quality, but it's minimal and not necessarily the best player format.

LAME, no questions asked. Together with EAC(Exact Audio Copy), you get the highest quality mp3s with either VBR or CBR 256Kbps. No encoder comes close, and XING sucks the most.

Haha. Maybe 2 years ago. But not any more, by a long shot. LAME is currently the best of the bunch, check out this site for some really good info.

Can you link to some RECENT proof? Audioactive player uses the Fraunhofer decoding algorithms, I'm not sure these are the best any longer.

edit: and tamade, try searching the forums. This topic has been covered over and over and over and over and over, probably 1000 posts or more.
