I was considering getting a P45 motherboard but realized there are nVidia options....

so which is the best bang for the buck? I'll be having a Core 2 Duo E8500 and DDR2 RAM on it, with an 8800GT or two.

thanks

Depends if you really want SLI or not.. if you want to OC.. etc. Depending what you are going for.. but lets say you want 2 sli 8800's and you are going to OC your cpu then try an x48 board. Otherwise.. no sli and no OC to a slight OC..the p45 will be better most likely.

The x48 and the P45 support CF not SLI. If you need SLI then you should have a look at the 680, 750, 790 mobos. The 680 is old and tested, the 790 is the next gen high end chipset from nV and the 750 is somewhat cheaper but still very good. The 680 and the 750 support DDR2 while the 790 DDR3. IMHO you should avoid the 780 as it is known to have problems and it is no new product. It consists of the old 680 plus the nv200 bridge chip.
