Bump,

would be interested in this too... I'm in Tokyo right now on a temporary 3 month work contract but the firm has offered me a 2 year full time position. If im gonna be here 2 years, then I might as well learn a lanaguage.

Awesome... I love Japanese culture. I've been to Tokyo b4 for like 4 days.. Altought it was short, but it was the coolest.

Not sure how helpful this would be but it was written by the guy who owns Taldren, the company that made the Starfleet Command games--

good question. i've been taking japanese at the local community college for the past 2 semesters. I could use something like this to practice with. It's REALLY hard to learn if you don't practice it very regularly...

Haha yu0 r t3h japaneze fanboi.

Um... it's not so much of fanboy thing.. It's just that ever since I was little, the stuff that I was exposed to the most was all Japanese related; like video games, TV shows, food and etc.... But I never get to learn any Japanese from those things... it's a shame....

I plan to go to Japan this summer for a week or 2 if my dad agrees....

to actually answer your question. the only software i have actually tried is Power Japanese. It's a really old app (Win 3.1). I don't even know if it's available anymore but it's good to practice hiragana and katakana. Here's a review of it: link. Like djheater said though, if you really want to learn the language, you will need to take classes. Even with the classes, it is very difficult unless you get heavy exposure to native speakers.

audio books would help because you would hear native speakers (with the correct accents and pronounciations) and get used to hearing the words. The software will help you learn the written language and vocabulary. Both would be good in conjunction with a class. On their own they would be pretty limited IMO.
