i'll add a poll as soon as some names come by cuz i only know 3
via s3 (on my msi board)
nvidia 6150
ati x300.

keep in mind i mean for light gaming and general use.

Great thread. I, too, would like to know. Also, if you don't mind me jumping into your thread, tanis, could you guys also pick which has the best picture quality? I have a computer in the basement hooked up to my Infocus X1 projector and I wouldn't mind some light gaming on it, as well as having the best picture output from the VGA port.

Thanks!

i know gfx cards are forthe most part better BUT most ppl don't wanna spend so much on gfx.
eg the msi mobo based on ati xpress 200 with an x300 cost 65 at newegg. and a discrete x300 cost around 40.
catch my drift.

@maxeroth. good idea include picture quality too. but that more of a preference.

from what i've seen the radeon x200 is a little bit better than the 6150 3d wise.

there is a much better selection of 6100/6150 boards though, i.e. you can easily find boards with component out or dvi, where it is really hard to find an x200 board like that. the best would probably be if you could find it the rs480 x200s that had 32mb of onboard video ram. i think only jetway made those.

i've had the rs480, and the i945g which is in my current box. it is basically no contest between those too, hopefully the i965 will be better but i am not expecting much out of that.

None of the Crossfire motherboards have IGP, which would be a compelling feature IMO since you tie up your dual gfx with a single display. It would be sweet to have the IGP driving another display if you have a preference for dual monitors, and want to run Crossfire.

what your point.
i thought the boartd you posted would have crossfire 3200 with igp. guess i was wrong.

but i agree enthusiasts boards should have igp as well. cuz sometimes it takes a while for the graphics card to arrive or the gfx blows and you need to use the comp.

what that about.
i thought all intell integrasted gfx sucked.

I have never seen a good Intel integrated graphics solution. Back when the 6800 and X800 series cards were the top, Intel's absolute best integrated graphics solution was around 1/4 the speed of a Geforce 2MX. I do not know how much they have improved, but I doubt they have by much.

Every year they talk about how this year will be different, with some new random technology that is supposed to improve performance dramatically.

Then when they release their new integrated chipset, they seem to always forget to put the performance in.

Its the biggest thing I miss moving the gaming rig to the Crossfire motherboard. I really got used to using the xpress 200 to drive my 17" LCD for a web browser and RivaTuner hardware monitor, it is a reduced function mode with limited resolution support, but perfect for text/utilities. It also allowed me to drive my RPTV as well...all at the same time as my main CRT. However, with the crossfire MB, I have to disable the LCD to enable the YPbPr output, no more triple display support:(

it seems like this is the way things are starting to go. i know if you buy a dell or hp especially with the intel chipsets, even if you buy a seperate video card they just plug the vga port on the integrated as it costs them less to not stock 2 boards.

i tend to always buy a board with an integrated video card as performance with an external video card is usually no different anyway. my reasons being i usually do not game that much, so i jus tbuy a card when i am playin ga game, and sell it on ebay rather than have a $200 card sit in my machine depreciating if i am not gaming.

that and when you finally get rid of the computer and say give it to a relative, there is already a video card onboard for them to use.
