What is the best IM network and client?

Yeah so I am kind of house bound for the next few months. Looking to join discussion on any number of topics. I figure there has to be some type of messaging program out there that I can find decent people on. I don't really care about video chat, but would like voice chat. I know about Yahoo IM, but there aren't many rooms on there with decent people, though there are a few.

I just signed up for facebook, which is something I didn't think I would do. Also stumble upon, and am looking for more interaction with people.

I guess AOL IM and ICQ now have voice, I don't know how they compare to yahoo though.

Only chat room client I've used recently is IRC. Occasionally they have channels with some interesting conversations on them, but no voice.

Pidgin for the client. It works with several protocols. I don't know about the network. I guess find a group that looks interesting, and join.

The best client is Trillian Astra, but as far as network I use all 3 as I have friends on all 3 and they all seem to work the same for me.
