I'm looking for a decent heatsink for my athlon64 rig. I have been using the stock cooler for about 3 months but need something better. I was considering water, but think I going to stick to air. Here are a few that I'm considering- ZALMAN CNPS7000A, Thermalright SLK948U, Swiftech MCX6400.

Out of these I'm leaning towards the SLK948U since I have always had good luck with thermalright. Any opinions will be appreciated.

I just put the Zalman on my A64 3200 and was able to go from 215 to 220. Temps are very good (36C under load) and I'm running Prime now to make sure it's stable. It's even much quieter than the stock fan. :)

Well, you're wanting to know which of the 3 best A64 heatsinks are the best. The Thermalright is better by not enough to make a difference, the Swiftech is as good, and if you aren't trying for a max OC, you'd have no problems at all with the Zalman either. My advice to you is pick the one that fits on your board without modifications, and if you don't mind a degree or so higher temps, for less sound without having to go through 15 different fans, get the Zalman.

I have an aspire super alien case that come with 6 fans, so it's already loud. I never have used a zalman, but have heard such great things about them.

Okay I got it narrowed down to the zalman and the thermalright. Any more votes, thanks alot guys for the quick responses.

SLK948U is hands down the best (although I have not seen a comparison against the Swiftech).
Both the Swiftech and Thermalright will definitely be better than the Zalman, although the Zalman is an excellent choice due to its low price and low noise. However, with a quiet fan that pushes decent amounts of air, the Swiftech and Thermalright will easily outperform the Zalman.

SLK948U with a good 92MM fan is probably the best. But thats about over $45 for HSF, you could the Thermaltake Silentboost for $25 at most retailers, I heard it offers performance on par with a SLK800 and uses a panaflo fan.

Zalman 7000 al/cu.
Nope it isn't. SLK948U as said is a way better. TT Venus 12 is also better if you are looking to save money. Zalman, in my view, comes as a distant third.

I'm using the Venus 12 and this is the easiest to install heatsink I've ever used, period. It's also large and cools exceeding well, The options of front or rear fan control or thermal probe if desired is a nice touch and on lowest rpm it's low 20'sdb but you can crank it up to 5500rpm for serious cooling if desired.

I am using it too. It replaced Zalman. I also changed Venus' fan with Tornado. Imagine the noise in my room when I crank up three of my computers all with power fans, no need for rock and roll. :music:

:Q J/K Seriously, it's refrreshing to see someone else who isn't obsessed with near silent computing  I like the white noise and if you aren't a nervous person or haven't had too much coffee the noise shouldn't be such an irritant anyhow, or so says a former 5800U owner ;)

When you have 4 comps running in a smaller room, noise supression is very important. :)

For silence and best Bang for the Buck Zalman CNPS7000A-AlCU

For Performance Thermalright SLK-948 but remember Swiftech and SLK cost substantially more esp after having to purchase an extra fan for them. And at equal noise level Zalman CNPS7000 will be very close if not outperform thermalright with a panaflo fan at 5V or 7V. Of course if you get a faster fan you might need to get a smart fan or get a rheobus which both cost a bit more. So really if u want to spend $43 + $10 fan on SLK = $53 or $70+ for MCX6400-V then go right ahead but at $31 the Zalman will offer excellent cooling and quietness.
