My friend needs to get a new hardrive, his western digital is crapping out on him and it hasnt been even a year. I think he has a 25 gig 7200rpm drive. I was wondering which hardrive would give him the best performance, he does a lot video editing on his computer...film major. if you have any suggestions...well that would be cool.

If money is not an issue, Ultra 160 SCSI contoller (Adaptec Pref) and an Ultra 160 SCSI HDD (Cheetah pref). If SCSI is too expensive or you dont want to mess with the interface (extra PCI card etc...) the Deskstar seems to get good reviews all around.

IBM first, Maxtor second, WD third.

i believe Maxtor and WD are more quiet than IBM. WD licence the technology from IBM. Maxtor probably the cheapest. IBM probably the highest quality.

Why not return the 25GB unit for a replacement...it should still be under waranty, even if you bought it used....just call WD and say "I lost the receipt" or "it was a gift" It will be under warranty so long as the manufacture date is withing the standard warranty period....

For film editing, I would definetly recommend SCSI setup. Low CPU overhead, even if it isnt' the fastest. Use a IDE for storage, but SCSI to work from.

Do this. Warranty Replace the WD unit and make it primary HD. Buy a cheap 2940UW or equiv. SCSI Card and like a 10GB SCSI-2 drive. Use the SCSI drive for all temp, and in-work video files. When done, store it on the WD unit.

Transfer rates don't help if your CPU is busy trying to processes video and store/retreive data....

I did a setup like this couple years ago when 2GB was king....

Thanks for everyones posts...I heard that IBM was the best, maxtor good, quantum not bad...As far as getting a replacement, he is definetly going to do that. I think he bought one today, going to find out tonight what it is. I know SCSI is the way to go. i'll tell him about that. This was basically my first post, and it was really helpful...anandtech rocks!!!!!!!!!!!

i have a 7200 western expert
and an ibm 75gxp 45 gig
and the ibm is hundreds of times quieter!!!!!!

IBM first, Quantum second.

Would never buy Seagate or Maxtor (worst two IMO).

IBM first, but too expensive
Maxtor second, best bang for the buck, never had any problems...
Western Digital third, they are ok... if you get a good deal, have had some problems...
Quantum distant fourth, I don't think I've ever had a good experience with Quantum drives...

He got a 45 gig maxtor....
the thing about his other hardrive is it wont run scnadisk anymore without it giving a warning saying that it restarted 10 times and it says to close all other programs. that is also preventing him from a much needed defrag. Is the hd just worn out or is this fixable. :disgust:

The drives I'd recommend (the ones I haven't had trouble with):
IBM
WD
Quantum (except Bigfoot)

Trust me on this one. IBM all the way. I have IBM, Maxtor, Western Digital and also Quantum. I prefer much on IBM. My Maxtor has had bad sectors on it after using it only for 4 months. I am really disappointed. My IBM works really great for over 3 years now. Buy IBM won't be wrong. You spend more but it's worth it.
