Hello...this question has been asked many times. ATers have all said the same things. Some like Maxtor, some like Western Digital, some like Seagate. They're all pretty good companies. Some have said that Maxtor's RMA is good because of quick responses, others have said Western Digital for speed, and Seagate for quiet operation...

I have a Seagate, and personally, I love it. It's really quiet, and Seagate has a reputation of making good drives...but that's just my opinion. Wait for other replies and make a decision according to all the replies. Good luck.

No question about it, the Seagate Cheetah X15 is the best hard drive out there.
The best performance, reliability, and warranty. But since you're probably talking
about IDE drives, it boils down to personal preference between IBM, Seagate,
Western Digital, and Maxtor. The latest drives from them aren't that far apart in
performance.. only differences are in feature-set such as amount of cache,
warranty, and stuff like that.

Check out storagereview.com for all your storage needs :)

If you're going scsi, it's the seagate x15-lp. If it's ide, the best out would be one of the special edition WD drives with 8mb cache.

I'm using a semi-old 13.6gb WD drive, it's worked great for two years. Not that loud, fast enough for what I need (though some would say it's 'only ATA-66' therefore horrendously slow), and it's never broken down. I'd say anything WD, ATA-100, and 7200rpm and you'll be satisfied.

It's really up to you. All these companies are reputable (even IBM to some extent). I have a Seagate Baracuda IV and it's great. However, I am a Maxtor fan. They have been the most reliable in my experiences. I had 2 hard drives on the same computer, a Maxtor and a Fujitsu. The maxtor was in there 3 years prior to the placement of the second hard drive. The computer suffers a lot of punishment when I get angry. The maxtor survived while the fujitsu needed to be RMAed TWICE. It failed the third time in another computer and I'm not going to even bother sending it in. When I got my seagate, there wasn't too many good Maxtor 7200rpm choices around. Now there is and I will definately get those in my next systems (used them in computers I built for friends). They are nice; not too quiet though, not too loud, decent speeds, overall good. I generally favor Maxtor for its durability as shown in my maxtor vs. fujitsu example.

But then again, it's up to you. Try to find a nice price and go with that one (Just make sure it's Maxtor, Seagate, WD,). Unless of course you are looking for certain attributes (noise = Seagate, speed = WD [although you won't be able to tell probably]).

EDIT: btw, I had a IBM fail on me.

I've got a 40G IBM 60gxp and love it - fast, silent, no problems at all. I know the 75gxp line had problems, butr I haven't heard that the 60gxp have had any issues.

I recently added a Maxtor 40G 5400rpm drive - it's ok. I haven't tested it speedwise vs. the IBM, but they seem similar. It's slightly louder though - I can hear it occasionally, I can't hear the IBM unless I take the cover off and put my ear against the drive cage :)

I'm running all WD without any problems, but I lean toward Seagate and IBM (as long as they're not 75GXP) as favorites.

My Maxtor 30GB 7200RPM is lightning fast and when I installed it in a 5-1/4" bay with the brackets, I can't even hear it working with my ear against the case. I put it in the 5-1/4" bay because of cable length limitations. I have a huge (27" tall) case and the cable won't reach from my hard drive to my slave cd-rom. ;)

Allow me to cast a vote while the opinions are flying...

I've only had one Segate. It was DOA out of the box.
I've had 6 WD's over the past 5 years and 4 of them endxed up dying within 18-30 months.
I've had 6 Maxtors and only one fail during the past five years. No, not all have been running for 5 years, but the majority of them have.

Currently using a 45g in one machine and a 30g in the second. Both are Maxtor. If I needed one tomorrow it would be another Maxtor. And they are VERY quiet as far as I can tell.

But this is like a Ford versus Chevy race. Go for the one you feel best about.

One last thing... Maxtor bought out Quantum. If you go with the Maxtor be sure to check the drive before you leave the store. I bought one a while back in a retail box and it was a Quantum. Took it back and swapped it with no problem.

I got the 40Gb 60GXP and it is quick and quite but I have had to rebuild OS several times now because it has bombed out on me.
IBM have a good utility called - IBM Fitness test - which boots off floppy.

I have just ordered the Maxtor D740X which is the ATA133 one, which has comparable speed to the 60GXP even using standard ATA100 channel.

Yes, there aint any noticable difference in ATA133 but who cares - it is very cheap drive - cheaper than 60GXP and more reliable.

Going from IBM to Maxtor 740DX model I can say I`m impressed with the speed and quietness so that is the model to buy :).
