The two perennial favorites are probably Hotel California and Stairway to Heaven. I like Eric Johnson's Cliffs of Dover and stuff from Joe Satriani!! :D

What do ya'll think?

My personal favorites are Slash's work in Guns n' Roses "November Rain." I also really like the solos in Metallica's "Fade to Black" and "Nothing Else Matters" (not sure whether it's James or Kirk playing those; I've never seen them in concert and haven't seen any of the DVD's in a while).

2nd to Gilmour in comfortably numb.

When I had a mustang, My favorite of all was the intro to Thunderstruck by AC/DC...never had a piece of music that got me more tickets then that :)

But, I think the most in your face solos I've ever heard were from John Petrucci.....

I don't listen to many different bands, but I think the solo at the 3:45 mark in (MetallicA) - The Unforgiven by Kirk is great. On the "Year and a Half in the Life of.." video, they showed how he was fighting with it and finally settled upon what was actually produced. The thing lasts almost a full minute.

Some good stepping...

So very very true. :) I aso like the solors from:

Guns n Roses - November Rain
Metallica - One, Fade to Black
Eric Johnson - Cliffs of Dover (the entire song is one big solo)
Dream Theater - Fatal Tragedy, hell, pretty much anything- Petrucci is a master

It may not be the most complicated solo ever, but I always like the solo in Pearl Jam's Alive.

I also love the solo from 'New Year's Day' by U2.
It's not very technical, but fits the song so well.

There is no way to pick a "best solo ever".
Personally, I like the slow solo in Master of Puppets. But there are so many.

In person, it would undoubtedly have to be Gibb Droll putting his spin on Long Black Train.

From an album it's nearly impossible to choose. Generally speaking, it would probably be something from Stevie Ray Vaughan or Buddy Guy for power blues shredding or either Eric Clapton for smooth control. Overall I prefer blues solos MUCH more than any other style save possibly jazz.

I don't think there is a good guitar solo. It is usually a waste of time using up space where good music could go.

Randy Roads in Ozzy Osbourne's Crazy Train or Eddie Van Halen in Van Halen's Eruption
