IBM ThinkPad R50p.

It won't be as fast as the 9100 or the XPS, but it's a lot lighter and still packs a lot of firepower (1.70 GHz Pentium M, FireGL T2 GPU (Radeon 9600 class)).

Lop,
If price is secondary then look at some of the custom makers out there. You will have to set a limit for your self or you can spend over 4 large on a lappy. For the budget minder gamer i would look at the new Emachines commin out soon. They have great bang for buck. We have already gone over the Emachine Vs. *ell and you can look at that thread here. Basicly it comes down to what you want to pay and what you want/need to get for what you pay. IMOP would go with the Emachine bang for buck. But if you got money to blow check out Voodoo or another company like them.

If you want performance where price isn't an issue, i'd definitely go for Voodoo M860. It has crap for battery life (<2hrs), weighs more than 8 lbs and it's on the maniacal side of overkill. But hell. It's the best you can get right now. Although I'm an emachines fanboy cause i'm a college student and I want bang/buck more, I can definitely appreciate those who aren't budget minded (wish I were one of them :( ). Also I went to the pctorque website and they just sell sagers which are pretty decent DTR's too. But the voodoo can come with an A64 3400+, Radeon 9700 128meg, 1gig RAM, a 60gig 7200rpm HD and a kickass screen all for the low, low price of around $3200. Incidentally, looking at the M860, I'm almost 100% sure it's made by the same ppl who make the m6805 (Arima) , so I can say it's quality by personal experience :).

I'd agree with stateofbeasley.. better to get a true notebook, like ibm t41p - it has almost the same performance, but is only 5lbs, and 1 inch thick.

Well, the choice is EASY: Arima W730D-K8, sold by VoodooPC as the Envy M:860..... Mobility radeon 9700 and Athlon 64 3400+ make it unbeatable despite what the *ell drones say......

Glad to see many of the guys are focused and gave the right suggestion.

Now, if you want to see it yourself and have the time, I suggest to order the "ugliron" XPS, any sager 8790 and the M860..... pit them against each other. Keep the winner and return the losers.....

The Arima w730d-k8 is out now as the Vodoo M860. On 04/10/04 Hypersonic will release their version, which, if prior prices are any indication, should be $500 - $1000 less than voodoo. You don't get a fancy paint job unless you fork over an extra $300, which narrows the gap some. Hypersonic has great ratings on resellerratings and a great LCD pixel policy. I'm guessing the model name will be AX7.

Has anyone dealt with Ibuypower? They seem to have pretty reasonable notebooks for the price. You can select an A64 3200, 1gb ram, 128mb Radeon 9600 Pro, 60gb 7200 drive, 1400x1050 15 inch screen, WinXP Home for 1,885.00. That doesn't seem like too shabby of a system. They have a very respectable resellerrating score too.

Ibuypower
