What is the best gamer system for me?

I float between a moderate to hardcore gamer at times in my life. I probably game 20 hours a week at night. Simply because I do not live with my fiance and I hate watching TV :x I used to play PS2 a good bit and had a ball doing it, although I was in college with many friends at that time. Since then, I have a hard time justifying a console system over a PC. I did play WoW, although I enjoy FPS's. I still think the mouse and keyboard are the most efficient way to move in a game like that. However, I do see games I might enjoy on the console systems. Would anyone recommend which system could potentially fit me and why? I don't think I will ever get away from some of the PC games, but I would like to console game some with friends and my fiance.

Overall, is it worth getting a console game for me? Why or why not? And if so, which one do you think would fit me the best according to the genres i like?

thanks in advance

Sounds like you enjoy playing games with others therefore get an Xbox 360 with a Live account.

Do you want a console?
If you want one, I think you should get one.
If you don't want one, it would probably be a waste of your money.

Oh yah a reason may help ...

I used to game on consoles all the time, and in college i was hooked on FPS online. Games like CS took up all my time in college.

Now that I'm done, I don't even play games on PC anymore. Hell I haven't even upgraded a vid card in like 5 years, nor do I plan on doing it. I play my Xbox360 for the urges I used to have on PC games, only now it's 100x more convenient and comfortable. Now I don't have to tweak settings and do all this funky stuff, sit at a desk with a mouse/keyboard in my hands. I can plop on my couch, be lazy as all hell in a comfortable position, with my 50" DLP in it's HD glory, and play games online.

I mainly play games online. I do the single player part, but I mainly just do the online part. I've been stuck on GoW for the past month or so. Gears of War gave me that feeling that Halo 2 did when it first came out, which Counter Strike gave me on the PC. Also you don't need real friends to play these games online. The headset makes it a lot easier to communicate on xbox live than typing on a keyboard ever was as well.

Also the Wii kicks ass too and is a great party system, is cheap, and is much dfiferent than anything else i've ever played. It's definitely worth checking out and will hold it's resale value for a while too in case you don't like it.

I wouldn't get a PS3 simply because of the fact it's just very underwhelming. When a system costs $200 more than it's closest competition, and doesn't even have games that run as well as it's $200 cheaper competition, I don't see how it's worth it. And it's exclusives (at the current moment) are not even close to being a system seller.

In all honesty, Gears of War, IMO, is a system seller. It has the best graphics I've ever seen in a game and the gameplay is very different than anything else I've played before. And trust me, you will get used to FPS on consoles, and may even grow to like them more on consoles. That happened to me.

I used to be a hardcore PC gamer. You couldnt convince my that a console was better. But since I've gotten my 360 I've stopped playing PC games. Consoles are just so much easier to deal with. I turn it out, flop on my couch with my wireless controller and just play. If I want to play multiplayer there are always plenty of people on Live and there is so hassle.

In short, get a 360. The library of games is pretty good. Looks great too.

PC - Competitive gaming and massive online networks
PlaystationX - Single player exclusives
Wii/GC - Family games / single console party games
Xbox360 - Older casual gamer

Find one or more groups you want to land in and then make your choice.

I disagree with 3/4 of those.

What is that for? You don't think Xbox 360 gamers are casual? Just look at this thread.

It's not a knock on anyone, are people actually offended for being considered casual gamers? Most people get the Xbox 360 to play multiplayer games casually, with friends, as opposed to competitively / seriously. We've had discussions on this before and most anyone sane and logical will admit a keyboard and mouse offers way more control, but that they are willing to give up that control for a more casual atmosphere on their couch.

Post your corrections?

I agree with only your PC one.

PSX has great sports games, fighters, single player games, and RPG's. The sports on the PSX are better than the 360 IMO just for the sheer fact that the psx controller is better for sports games. IMO, D-Pads are better suited for sports and fighters, and the DPad on the 360 blows hard. It's much better on the PSX and I would play a sports game on the psx over 360 any day, regardless of the graphics being better on the 360 (at the moment atleast)

Wii/GC. They have some very good first party games in general, a lot of which don't fit into your 2 categories. Metroid Prime, Zelda, Mario, even RE4 (which made it to the ps2 eventually though). Those are only a few. They also have very intuitive and different games, such as Trauma Center. But yes, they do also have some good family/party games.

Xbox360. Go play any popular game and you will see there are PLENTY of little annoying children playing online on any given game. Xbox Live being so simple for anyone to get connected to (as oppose to PC online gaming) makes it so that these 10 year olds can get on and play any games. Sure there are older casual gamers that are on there, but to say it's "mostly" older casual games is very misleading. The 360 also has by far the most/best shooters out of any console (not counting PC), and probably the same can be said for racers.

Yea, there are young gamers on the 360, but I feel it is marketed to the older casual gamer, and the games are designed around that fact. GRAW, Gears of War, Halo, its a very older male audience feeling.

And yea, the PS has good fighters and RPGs, I kind of meant that under SP exclusives. If you are getting any playstation, it is mainly for it's exclusives. The multiplayer is unproven and will most likely be worse than XBL.

The Wii/GC has good first party games, but most of them, ok not RE4, but most are good family games also. I'd consider it a family-centric console. You may have 1 or 2 games that you won't want your kids playing, but most of the games are going to work for anyone in the family.

In other words, I'm not sure why you disagree with my generalizations, because I agree completely with yours.

Well, here is the list of games i played as of late. I took 3 months off after college to relax and put a good bit of time into games...probably 40 hours (WoW unfortunately)

-WC3
-Starcraft
-WoW
-CS
-UT2003
-Quake 3 Capturestrike (sooo fun...i should get back into this)
-DoD

As of right now, i just play DoTA and DoD. I have always been a sports game fan, just never on the PC and always on the PS2. How much is live? Is it a monthly/yearly or life subscription? I am curious as to how much a XBOX360 would toss me back with all the wireless controllers and live and a few games...

If you get a premium system it comes with a year of live, otherwise it is ~$50-60/yr but you can often find deals to make it more like $30. So overall it isn't a large cost and you get free game demos, xbox live arcade games, you can purchase tv shows/movies and various trailers etc etc.

Personally I love my 360 and I think there are quite a few appealing games, more than any other system (other than PC obviously).

Some of my favorites in no particular order:

Gears of War (amazing, amazing game imho)

Saints Row (a lot of fun)

Dead Rising (again fun if you approach it with the right mind set, and not try to do everything the first time through)

NCAA football (madden too)

Fight Night 3 (I think a way underrated game if you like boxing games, online is/was a blast for me)

Viva Pinata (just got it so I'm still early into but I can see the appeal)

Table Tennis (I actually don't care for this one much, but everyone else I know who has played it love it..go figure)

Also I enjoyed Cod2 and very briefly Cod3 so far.

Also if you do have a nice High Def set up, I'd strongly vote for console. I think half the reason why I love it is to be able to lay out on my couch and play on 40" HDTV or 92" screen (720p projector). The only game that I go back to play on PC now is Civ4.
