I'm partial to Toshiba's myself. I have both the SD-M1212 and SD-M1612. Both have been very reliable performers for me.

Yes, you should. And I second the opinion on Toshiba drives. Very quiet, reliable, but not the fastest at DVD ripping. If you want to do this, get a Lite-on.

My Toshiba 16x DVD drive is a beaut. Not too fast at ripping mp3 or DVDs but its dead silent and is fast enough with regular CDs. If you want pure speed (but dont mind noise) get a Lite-On 16x DVD drive. Its fast at everything :)

Can the SD-M1212 read DVD+R's or DVD+RW's? I was looking for the specs on the Toshiba website and I couldn't find them.

I have to agree on the Liteon. It flies and sounds like it is about to take off. It also reads just about everything you throw at it.

How do you define BEST? Speed, quiet, reliable or ease of use?

My next DVD-ROM will be the same as the last three I bought in the past year and a half......Pioneer 106S, slot loading drive.

Quiet, reliable, 50% less button presses to access it.

Which LiteOn do you guys have?

I've been looking at the LiteOn LTD-163 and LTD-166. The LTD-166 I think just came out and is fully compliant with DVD-Multi. How loud is "loud?" I have a LiteOn 24x burner - is it as loud as that? I really need to replace this dinosaur of a Pioneer 104.

i use Liteon, and I'm happy with it. Later on, i built a system for my friend, using ASUS DVD, and it's a good drive too.

I would suggest either Liteon, Toshiba, or Pioneer.

If quietness is your concern, get the Toshiba, if speed and ripping ability is, get the Liteon, or if you want a slot load get the Pioneer (they also make the standard tray drive too).
