While progressive scan should be standard, what other goodies should come out of a player in this price range? And are there any in this range that omit the built-in sound chip for DTS or DD if you have an external receiver for something else, such as excellent video processor, DVD Audio or SACD? Thanks in advance.

And, if you use the digital audio output, it will bypass the internal decoder. But, if you want DVD Audio, you have to use the analog outputs. I believe that's part of the DVD Audio 'copy-protection'.

The only thing I know I want in a future DVD player is the ability to play AVIs. Any available which are capable of this?

Modded XBOX with Xbox Media Player is the best one I know of.

I don't get it. Why would DVD audio require analog (stereo) when it's supposed to take advantage of your 5.1 setup?

The player offers 6-channel analog outputs that go to the 6-channel analog inputs on your receiver.

It's to prevent you from making a digital copy of the audio.

Not really better or worse, it's just different.

Receivers typically won't decode DVD audio, though, so you need the player to pass an analog signal rather than digital.
