in your opinon wahts the best direction to mount it? does it matter where the heat pipes are locacted? i have the rig in the sig so what do you think is the best? the heatpipes on the bottom with fan over the ram?

At systemcooling.com 's review of the XP-120 or XP-90, they experimented with all the different directions you could mount the heatsinks. There wasn't much of a difference, but one was the best. Not sure which direction it was, so you might want to check it out yourself.

"I tried each possible position and the SI-120 fits the motherboard without any clearance issues. According to Thermalright, the position of the heatpipes does not really matter and will not affect the performance."

twitchee2 to know why it does not matter with a quality heat pipe HS read heat pipes under advanced cooling at this LINK. I prefer knowing why with facts not hear say. This is a dated site but the info applies.

Whichever way fits your mobo best (not meant as a "smart allec" comment 😉)& which ever way the fan "hangs" over the FET's the most so as to aid in cooling them. Pipe orientation does not matter as stated above.

But there are those who will tell you it does!! Trust me I have the XP120 and I have had those pipes in every voncievable position. Temps are all the same regardless of pipe position or orientation!!

I hace the SI-120 and the same board. I mounted it so tha tthe heat pipes were jutting out toward the PCIe slots and away from the RAM. THis left a little overhang over the RAM. I also Cheated the Fan a bit toward the RAM to provide extra colling there. And it still catches the mosfits around the CPU.

But bottom line, I aggree with everyone else that it probably makes little difference. Carefel with Thermal Take fans, they ofthen have shafts instead of mounting holes and the fan clip won't work on them. If you don't understand what I'm talking about check out this link

Si-120 and TT fan compatibility

good luck!
