The Sony 34XBR960 is the creme de la creme, and arguably the best CRT TV ever built. 220 pounds of killer picture quality, a great digital tuner and, if you care, pretty good sound quality to boot.

Don't places like Circuit City and Best Buy sell the same Sony TV, but with slightly different model numbers so it is difficult to compare prices?

Not from what I have seen. Circuit City, HH Gregg, and Best Buy all had the same Sony models from when I was shopping for my tv.

I thought Pioneer was regarded as the Rolls of TVs, and Sony as MB and Bimmer.

I think they've just started selling HDTVs, check out their website.

Hmmm - it looks like Sony has discontinued it, and their existing models are a little misleading in their nomenclature. They now have the much cheaper 34XBR970, but that is NOT the same set, and doesn't have the Super Fine CRT tube that was really the defining characteristic of the 960. There don't appear to be any more XBR sets with the Super Fine CRT tube, which I guess makes the 960 the last of its breed. The KD-34XS955N looks like the top of their CRT line now - it's odd that they've moved the XBR badge to an inferior set.

It is possible that some stores may have a slightly older or newer model, and since TV model names/numbers are made up of so many different things, just one number different could mean it is the same model, but maybe from a different year, and it will most probably have different offerings in terms of items you can plug in.

Negative, at least when it comes to the best CRT HDTV sets. The Sony Super Fine XBR sets are generally acknowledged as setting the standard for every other TV in terms of visual fidelity. See, e.g., this review.
