What is the best 300+ GB Hard Drive at the moment?

aircooled

What is the best 300+ GB Hard Drive at the moment? Quiet would be nice but not necessary.

I've had good luck with both WD and modern Maxtor'sn the 200+GB range, but thinking about Seagate this time..

opinions?

The Maxtor ones with 16MB cache completely dominate the 300GB market. They are much better performance wise than any of the competitor's harddrives, as well as being nearly as silent.

I have the Maxtor 300GB/16MB, it is neither fast nor silent.

I really like the WD 320 GB I bought from MOnarch computers from a deal posted in the hot deals section.

Very quiet, and seems to be pretty fast. No problems so far.

Damn, I didn't know they were already making 400-giggeres.

I just ordered this: Seagate Technology
400GB Barracuda 7200.8 Ultra ATA-100 Internal Hard Drive

Since I'm putting it in my older Shuttle XPC (SN41G2) which only holds one Hard drive (no SATA) I wanted BIG!

I'll let you know how it works. 🙂 (just my luck the BIOS wont recognise it....) 🙂
Thanks all!

i cant complain about noise cuz my case already sounds like a jet engine, but it doesnt sound any louder with the addition of this drive

however i can defintely attest to the fact that the drive is FAST.

i dont know what CalvinHobbes is running that makes it seem slow, but i did some unscientific tests and it was faster all the times, even faster than my raptor in some cases.

Yeah, it certainly is quiet and fast.

Another impressed user; I received this a few days ago, dropped it into my system and am very impressed with its speed and low noise. Hopefully it'll be reliable, as well.

I used to use WDs exclusively not too long ago and this is what I've noticed. They start out quiet but they seem to develope a whiny spindle noise after a bit. Maybe the newest models are better but that just turned me off, they became the loudest thing in my rig! Sure WDs RMA policy is nice, they gladly replaced them because I said they were noisy and they even said, "...if you're not happy with the drive..." So I switched to Seagate and let me tell you, when I first pluged it in I was elated, much quieter. I've had two 200gb 7200.7 IDEs for maybe a year or so now and they are still quiet. Just got two 300gb 7200.8 SATAs and the only difference I've noticed is they run hotter than the 7200.7 I thought I heard that SATAs run hotter so that may be it. Finally Seagate now has a 5 year warranty.

Then maybe you can't be satisfied. The Maxtor Maxline series is usually as fast or faster than the top of the line Raptors. They are not the most silent of all drives, but they are quieter than your average 7200RPM drive.
