Hi,

I have been looking around for quite a big for a good multifunction device that will do a good job in printing, copying scanning and all those things that the 3 in one devices do. I have read many reviews in THG, but I haven't heard many reviews that mention how these devices do in Linux. at the same time I am looking for something below $200 that also has cheap ink cartidges

can you provide me liks or any suggestions.

thanks in advance,

This thread from a SuSe discussion list has some good responses to it, so it may be worth reading through.
They all generally follow the same rule as printers -- if the manufacturer has a history of supporting or being readily supported by linux, then they would also make ideal 3-in-1s. Look to HP and Epson as the prime examples of these.

Here's HP's OfficeJet support stuff

Other then that, I don't know, never gave it much thought.

The best mechanism for support of printers is the CUPS project (common unix printer service or something like that.) There is the old Unix way with the lpr stuff, but that sucks. The lpr(?) may support something that doesn't work on Cups, but I doubt it.

It's used in linux OSes as well as OS X 10.2 and above as the main printing mechanism. So if the printing part is supported in OS X it's probably supported in Linux.

Scanners are used via the SANE-library API. Xsane is a front end for it. It's also used in OS X, but I don't know if it is the standard way of doing things. So look at that, they also have a listing of supported scanners on the homepage

Just so you know.

As far as faxing, there are several software solutions to sending and recieving faxes.. of course they require a nice real-modem to support them. I don't know about what 3-in-1 stuff uses though. A bit ignorant I am. 🙁
