My old video card broke, and I am look to get a high quality 2D video card. I am looking for a card that will razor sharp text, but does not have to be that great at 3d graphics.

Matrox is the best at 2d.

If you want a balance between games and 2D go for a Radeon.

Or a little more 3d and a little les 2D- a Kyro2.

Stay away from anything made by NVida.

Matrox. G450. Flicker free and high refresh rates. Beautiful color. Only Fair 3D performance.

Hmm they will be releasing g550 soon.
You might want to wait to get that, if can't wait then get G450.

It has the best 2D quality.

If you are looking for sharp 2D text, the GF2 (or any NVidia card for that matter) is a bad idea.

As everyone else has said, Matrox has the best 2D, but is rather crippled when it comes to 3D rendering.

The Radeon's are a good compromise (2D is still EXCELLENT, but not quite as good as the Matrox cards) if you plan to do any gaming whatsoever.

Everone's post after TunaBoo was useless (mine too). He summed it up perfectly :)

Around August 2001, Matrox will release G550.
MSRP: $125

Probably cheaper for the OEM version.

A few years ago, this was a funny thing to say:

"Best videocards: Trident, Tseng Labs and S3" (S3 was even called a "2d decelerator")

Yeah Tseng was the fastest 2D card then.
When I was looking for an upgrade for my AT with 10Mhz speed at Turbo.
