What is the ATI equivalent of the Nvidia 7800GT?

I know it's not the 1800 or 1900, any opinions? I might jump ship back to ATI..

The equivalent in performance is X1800XL, but i think that these ones are more expansive

The X1800XL is the ATi equivilent to the 7800GT. And although its a little slower and a little more expensive it overclocks far better. With a 3rd party cooling solution many people have overclock the core to (or nearly to) XT speeds and the memory typically bites the dust around it rated frequency. (700MHz)

7800 gt is better than X1800XL and X1800XT is better than the 7800GT so no equivalent card..
EDIT: just wanted to say that i wanted to get the equivalent card of the 7800GT but i cudnt find that one so am getting the GT..

also the 1700 are coming out which are 8 pipes with 3 shaders each.

The 7800GT and X1800XL are very close in performance so yes, they are equivalent. They haven't quite come down to the lowball prices that the GTs have, but they're not that much more ($320 is lowest I see right now). Some might even choose it over the GT for it's better features, IQ and overclocking potential.

The 7800GT and X1800XL are very close in performance so yes, they are equivalent. IMO performance-wise....the 7800GT and X1800XL are ~ equal, but the $50+ price premium for an X1800XL is NOT worth it IMO. Plus I've read the X1800XL generally runs hot; therefore, I would suspect one would have to pay for/hassle with after market cooling solutions in order to get a decent OC with a X1800XL.

Based on the above, a slightly lower performering card like the X1800XL is NOT worth any price premium and should be priced at <$250 in order to currently compete with a $280 7800GT.

I dont see how the XT is comparable - the 7800gt gets obliterated in most cases by the x1800xt, but to be fair the XT is also priced way higher. The x1800xl is on par in performance, but it also costs a good $50 or more higher, so basically on a bang/buck basis the 7800gt does not have a competitor (unless you count a modded gto2, but then the sm3 nazis will start whining for sure...)

Due to a more detailed perusal xbit's review i'd like to change my opinion. IMO the 7800gt lands between the x1800xl and x1800xt in most cases.

I agree with Budarow. I'd only buy the X1800XL if it was at the $250 price point ($30-40 cheaper than the 7800gt).

THey are roughly equivalent, and x1800's are pretty damn cheap now. Mine gets near XT speeds on stock cooling too.

I agree with Budarow. I'd only buy the X1800XL if it was at the $250 price point ($30-40 cheaper than the 7800gt).

I actually just realized that in those xbit benches in AOE3, there's no way they could have been running it with HDR enabled and get the kind of results they did, according to this page . But if I look at the screenshots on top of the page, it seems like HDR is enabled, no? Does anyone have the game that can verify this - is there a noticeable IQ difference between sm2 and sm3 modes when HDR is OFF in both cases?

Price wise i think that the XT will be equivalent soon. The XL is comparable in price and performance, and it overclockes like a demon when done right....

Price/performance wise, really, there isn't anything comparable to 7800GT, especially the preoverclocked ones. But X1800XL was supposed to be its direct competitor.

Check out the X1800XL results in firingsquad's X1900 benchie's - http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/ati_radeon_x1900_xt_preview/page10.asp - it beats the GT more often than looses(esp. for the games I play these benches were an eye opener!)

If the XL were priced at $280 or so(or = GT pricing) it would be a great deal/card.

X1800XL overclock like hell. It's frequent a XL suporting Xt frequency's and in that case GT is worse. With this last drivers, ATI has made X1800XL lightly better than 7800GT in some benchmark/games, thing that didn't hapen in the past.

If you plan on running two cards, SLI pwns Crossfire, so just for expandability, go with the 7800GT.
