I'm mainly speaking about chicken / turkey.

I don't understand it. It seems like people predominately prefer white meat to dark meat. Chicken breasts are seen as the best part of the chicken. Restaurants proudly proclaim "all white meat chicken" on their dishes. Why?

Whenever I have white meat chicken, it is bland / tasteless, has a terrible flaky and somewhat sticky texture, and more often than not, quite dry. Dark meat, on the other hand, has none of these; it is quite flavorful, has a smooth and 'crisp' texture, and I can't remember the last time I had dry dark meat.

So what makes people go for white meat, because I really can't wrap my brain around it. Yes I know it is slightly healthier, but people I know generally aren't choosing it based on health concerns. Still, I can't accept that being slightly healthier is the sole reason for all of this.

Bad dark meat is better than bad white meat, but good white meat is better than good dark meat.

I prefer the flavor and texture of white meat. The dark meat might as well be fed to the dog.

I have a strong negative connotation associated with the word "dark" which I assume is just ambient southern\Texan racism. Seriously, I've never ordered\asked for dark meet, ever, and I can't tell you why other than I don't like the word "dark."

What would you call a room lacking in light? Or a room used to develop photographs...?

what originally started as something that was healthy, became "cool"

Some people prefer chocolate ice cream, others prefer vanilla. If you like dark meat, that's great. Thank you for saving the dry white meat for me.

Personally, I prefer the chewier, sturdier texture and you're less likely to encounter fat. That having been said, I do like BBQ'd and fried chicken drumsticks.

So many answers in my mind, fighting to be typed out and posted.

Not one single clean one, though.

To me, white meat is flavorless, but I know some people who only eat white meat.

I like dark meat, I like white meat. If I had to choose a favorite, I'd say, white meat hot and dark meat cold.

For me, the joy comes in cooking a chicken/turkey perfectly, where the white meat and dark meat are both delicious, this is a pretty narrow window.

It's good that people prefer dark meat or white meat, it ensures the whole bird gets et!

White meat sucks; it isn't even good in soup. If it's gonna be moist anywhere, it'll be in a fuckin' can of soup, but it still tastes like little pieces of glued sawdust. I'll always choose dark meat if given a choice.

The meatiest parts of a bird are the flight muscles on its chest, called breast meat, and the walking muscles on the first and second segments of its legs, called the thigh and drumstick, respectively.

Dark meat, which avian myologists (bird muscle scientists) refer to as "red muscle," is used for sustained activity--chiefly walking, in the case of a chicken. The dark color comes from the protien myoglobin, which plays a key role in oxygen uptake within cells. White muscle, in contrast, is suitable only for short, ineffectual bursts of activity such as, for chickens, flying. Thus the chicken's leg and thigh meat are dark while its breast meat (which makes up the primary flight muscles) is white. Other birds with breast muscle more suitable for sustained flight, such as ducks and geese, have red muscle (and therefore dark meat) throughout.

depends how its cooked, the pressure fried kfc type tenderness makes it all about equal.

chicken breasts can be tough if over cooked.

The main reason people hate white meat and think it's dry and bland is because the majority of chicken sold are a, more or less, mutant strain of chickens that grow to 8 pounds in 8 weeks. They've been genetically selected for their rapid growth and large breasts - without a damn given about how they taste.
