Man, I was walking through the free-expression tunnel on campus and I saw this hot chick which definitely got my attention...but then she pulled out a pack of cigs and started patting the pack on her palm. ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!:|:|

What is the appeal of those damn cancer sticks?? Is it the smell?? Is it the yellow teeth?? How about the $$$ a week spent on the habit?? Maybe the funky breath?? Maybe the joy of pissing someone off with the second hand smoke??

I dunno, please enlighten me:D

Hey NFS4.

Don't expect a valid or reasonable answer.. they'll say anything to justify their habbit, to themselves atleast.
Its a horrible habbit with NO positive results. Stress releif IS NOT a valid claim.

IF you like the feeling of physical particals shooting down your throat.. go right ahead. I'll visit you in the hospital when you have cancer.

There is no real appeal besides this imagery of potential coolness smoking it. By the time one realizes that it's kinda dumb to think this makes them look "cool", they're addicted. I smoke on occasion when I drink, but I'll be damned if I ever get addicted to 'em. (Yes I know, these two statements contradict themselves, so I could be in trouble... :Q

Its the feeling it gives you when you smoke one. It feels really really good at first. If you ever tried one, you'll know why.

But a few months later, its harder and harder to get that buzz. Eventually it totally goes away. But by that time, youre addicted.

Unless youre addicted to cigs, you can't possibly understand how hard it is to quit. It has a total deathgrip on you. The best way to describe it is like a hunger. You know that feeling you get if you havent eaten all day? Its the same feeling. And just like eating, the longer you go without food, the more and more hungry you get, until eventually you just dont have the urge to eat anymore at all.

But try not eating a single thing for a week, and see how you feel.

I'm not justifying it. Its a horrible habit. I had quit over the summer, but when I got back to college there was so much damn smoke around me I eventually cracked on a bad day and grabbed one. And here I am again smoking. Try not eating for a week, and then sit down with your friends while theyre at dinner. You can smell the delicious food, and its beckoning you, but you cant have any.

And thats why its so god damn hard to quit. It has nothing to do with coolness. Its nice to have a smoke every once in a while, but most of the time, its just another need to fufill.

Ever made out with a smoker? MMMMMmmm.. tastey.

I'd have to disagree with that statement..
I have smoked a cig or two.. maybe a total of 4-5 in my life. (Years ago)
I don't have an addictive personality, and I have strong will power.. fack cigs.

Smoke a pack over the course of a week, inhale every pull, and then see how you feel about cigarettes.

I didn't start smoking until I was 18. At that point in my life I had never been drunk. It seemed like the least "evil" thing I could do at the time. I still smoke now, and I've quit a couple times. At this point it's a stress relief thing. During hectic times at work, I can go outside, have a smoke, and refocus. That's just my two cents...

Right. Why smoke if it is so disgusting and harmful? Because it is pleasurable. It gives you a much faster buzz than alcohol and it's a better buzz because your reflexes aren't impaired (they are actually heightened). But, alas, I haven't had a cigarette in years because they'll eventually kill you, you know.

Don't ask me, I don't understand it. The only appeal I can think of is it's something to do when you're bored. And the hourly smoke breaks have to be nice.

A smoke after a big meal, or a long hectic day at work, non-smokers wouldn't understand that. Like anything else, the key is moderation. Being a light smoker isn't any worse than being a light consumer of fast food (most people are heavy, myself I've quit fast food altogether). Same goes for alcohol and caffeine, especially soda, both of which again I no longer partake of.

So, you'll have to excuse me for laughing at you guys, who almost assuredly consume fast food, drink soda or coffee, and probably alcohol, bad mouthing cigarettes. Yes, let's see who lives longer.

LOL, that is soooooo fuggin' funny. Here in Burlington (I'm at home right now), LabCorp ownz about half of the city;) (they have buildings EVERYWHERE). I always get a kick out of it during winter time when I drive downtown and see a group of about 5 or 6 LabCorp employees standing in a huddle puffing on cigs in their big winter jackets:D:D

It is a major stress relief, but anyone who smokes for that reason is fooling themselves. They are addicted. It sucks. And if second hand smoke bothers you, kindly ask the person to put out the cigarette or move away from you. I would if asked politely.

You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Nicotine DOES have effects, including reducing stress. Why is it that you think the native indians used it for thousands of years to treat everything from headaches to hunger? It was first brought to Europe by Jacque Cartier in 1550, and by the late 1500s, smoking had become widespread in Europe. Within one generation, which is 30 years, it became common all over the world. 30 years may seem like a long time these days, but back then, it was at an unprecedented rate (no other idea, belief, technology, or behavior have ever migrated so fast). It was even consider a panacea by the medical community.

So there are obviously benefits to it if it became so popular so fast. There has been experimental research on its stress reduction effects, as well as alerting the mind and actually increasing cognitive ability (by stimulating glutamate release), including the ability to concentrate and memory retention. It causes a rapid release of adrenaline (epinephrin), and blocks insulin, increases metabolic rate, and activates the dopamine pathways (pleasure center of the brain).

So it's extremely ignorant to say there are no positive effects... it's just the negative effects should outweight the positives.

What is the appeal of those damn cancer sticks?? Is it the smell?? Is it the yellow teeth?? How about the $$$ a week spent on the habit?? Maybe the funky breath?? Maybe the joy of pissing someone off with the second hand smoke??

No, it's all the positive effects i mentioned up top. When you're tire, you light a smoke and you get a burst of adrenaline. If you have a hard time concentrating, light up a smoke and it becomes easier. If you're stressed out, such as in a social situation, light one up and your stress gets reduced. And if you're bored, light one up and you'll feel good (because of the activation of the dopamine pathways).

But the effects are so much worst. Cancer, emphysema, waking up and coughing out a lung, bad breath, yellow teeth, feeling of tar all over your face and finger, cardiac diseases, shortness of breath, ect.

There is no real appeal besides this imagery of potential coolness smoking it.

Utter crap. Coolness and image is the thing that gets you started, but it's the positive and addictive nature of smoking that gets you going. The first time you smoke, it's utter crap... you get a headache, possibly room spinning, and actually feeling physically ill. But once you overcome that, which happens after a few smokes, you begin to really feel the positive effects of it. The tobacco company knows this, and they try damn hard to make the image of teen smoking as cool.

Hehe, I started my day off with a cup of coffee, had lunch at taco bell with a large pepsi, smoked almost an entire pack, and I'm about to go get drunk and stoned.

A wise man once said, "Theres a time and a place for everything, and its called college."

Hmmm, let's see. The appeal when I was fourteen was that I would look cool. The appeal now is that I won't drive myself nuts. I probably should have posted in the "regrets" thread. When I started smoking, it was one a day. The first time I smoked two, I almost puked. Didn't stop me though. Before long, I was an experienced smoker with a pack-a-day habit. Yeah, they smell, they're expensive as $hit, and at this point, they don't look too cool either. They do have a calming effect, and a smoke with a cup of coffee is a great thing, but the primary reason I smoke is because if I don't, I will be an even bigger prick than I already am, at least for a week or two.

And I don't get any joy from pissing people off with second hand smoke, with the possible exception of really self-righteous non-smokers like Phuz.:D

Being around smokers dosen't bother me (as long as its a moderate habit). I dont smoke, but smoking is apparently stress releaving, quick fix kind of thing.

How about this ;):

People smoke because irational behaviour is the ultimate triumph of the rational mind.

personally, i started smoking because of family trauma, i was so depressed i didn't realize i got addicted.

now from the previous posts it may seem i am weak because i smoke cigarettes. it's a kinda weird because i've successfully quit EQ cold turkey, no problems after about a month of play, but i can't kick cigarettes. i've also quit soda for about 6 months, meat for about 6 months.

not all at once but at different stages of my life. as for an addictive personality, i dont think i have one. i've experimented with a lot of things (more drugs than in a columbian basement). i could be wrong, but i don't going around thinking i have all the answers.

smoking is bad though.

btw, the last guy that said i was weak, i kicked his ass then i fscked his girlfriend and his sister in the same night.

LOL EQ is difficult to quit, but it's not an addiction. There are no physiological dependencies, and you dont' suffer withdrawal effects.
