What is the 16550A connection on my MSI motherboard used for?

The motherboard manual shows plugging in a 9 pin cable to this connection, but what accessories or external devices use 16550a?

I did a web search on 16550a, but it didn't help much.

old serial port interface - RS232/Infrared, They're just phasing out the DB-9 serial connectors from the motherboard along with DB-25 parallel port connectors (they take up a lot of space) and putting in bunches of USB jacks.

Yeah, it's common to see Mobo manufacturers to just have headers for the serial and parallel ports instead of putting the DE9 and DB25 on the back panel (for the reasons PottedMeat mentioned). That way, people who really need those connections (EEs come to mind) can get a bracket with the DE9 and DB25 and connect to those headers.
