a few months back, I watched on the news and also head on the radio about some stone that looks almost like a real diamond, but it would cost a lot less. Some people took it to various places and even the experts could not tell that the stone was not a real diamond.

I forgot what it was called, but I *think* it started with the letter M......

anyone know what Im talking about?

anyone bought one before? what are your thoughts? worth the money? did your girl like it?

what "expert"? Any chemist would be able to tell that the stone is not a real diamond by running the usual spectroscopic analyses.

A jeweler isn't likely to have a spectroscopic method available to him at his shop - according to Wikipedia, the synthetic diamonds are chemically, physically, and optically the same as real diamonds.

DeBeers, not surprisingly, has some sort of diamond tester that can detect the trace impurities used in the process to determine if it's a synthetic diamond. From their website it looks like a pretty hefty machine and not like something a regular jeweler would have.

The synthetic diamond manufacturers are all laser-marking their diamonds as such so that's how a jeweler would be able to tell.

Just to clarify, moissanite != synthetic diamond. A synthetic diamond IS a diamond, moissanite LOOKS LIKE a diamond.
