it doesn't seem back-water enough to be part of the south, but it doesn't seem west enough to be part of the south-west either.

Texas is it's own little state/country. I lived there for 10 years. It's not the south. It's not the midwest. It's not the west. It's "Texas." Texans have their own way of thinking and doing things. I liked it there. Could do without all the protests to "Teach my baby skool en Espanol!!!" (sic) but that's another story.

Plenty of Texans I know consider it to be its own category. But then most Texans I know are annoyingly proud of being from Texas.

I lived in Texas for 14 years, and I liked it.

Texas IS its own country - and a large one at that ;)

It has desert, plains, plateaus, hill country, mountains, forests, swamps, coast, grasslands, etc... and takes a day to drive across. Yeah, pretty much qualifies as a medium-sized nation.

I've actually only been in Texas once... flew into Dallas, drove up to Oklahoma to visit friends, and flew back to the east coast from OK. all I really remember about it was that it smelled bad. like, even worse than NJ (though not as bad as the NJ swamps)

Texas is Hell

Hell in Texas:

THE DEVIL, WE'RE TOLD, IN HELL WAS CHAINED,
AND A THOUSAND YEARS HE THERE REMAINED,
AND HE NEVER COMPLAINED, NOR DID HE GROAN,
BUT DETERMINED TO START A HELL OF HIS OWN
WHERE HE COULD TORMENT THE SOULS OF MEN
WITHOUT BEING CHAINED TO A PRISON PEN.

SO HE ASKED THE LORD IF HE HAD ON HAND
ANYTHING LEFT WHEN HE MADE THE LAND.
THE LORD SAID, "YES, I HAD PLENTY ON HAND,
BUT I LEFT IT DOWN ON THE RIO GRANDE.
THE FACT IS, OLD BOY, THE STUFF IS SO POOR,
I DON'T THINK YOU CAN USE IT IN HELL ANYMORE."

BUT THE DEVIL WENT DOWN TO LOOK AT THE TRUCK,
AND SAID IF IT CAME AS A GIFT, HE WAS STUCK;
FOR AFTER EXAMINING IT CAREFUL AND WELL
HE CONCLUDED THE PLACE WAS TOO DRY FOR HELL.
SO IN ORDER TO GET IT OFF HIS HANDS
GOD PROMISED THE DEVIL TO WATER THE LANDS.

FOR HE HAD SOME WATER, OR RATHER SOME DREGS,
A REGULAR CATHARTIC THAT SMELT LIKE BAD EGGS.
HENCE THE DEAL WAS CLOSED AND THE DEED WAS GIVEN,
AND THE LORD WENT BACK TO HIS PLACE IN HEAVEN,
AND THE DEVIL SAID, "I HAVE ALL THAT IS NEEDED
TO MAKE A GOOD HELL." AND THUS HE SUCCEEDED.

HE BEGAN TO PUT THORNS ON ALL THE TREES,
AND HE MIXED THE SAND WITH MILLIONS OF FLEAS,
HE SCATTERED TARANTULAS ALONG ALL THE ROADS,
PUT THORNS ON THE CACTI AND HORNS ON THE TOADS;
HE LENGTHENED THE HORNS OF THE TEXAS STEERS
AND PUT AN ADDITION ON JACK RABBIT'S EARS.

HE PUT LITTLE DEVILS IN THE BRONCO STEED
AND POISONED THE FEET OF THE CENTIPEDE.
THE RATTLESNAKE BITES YOU, THE SCORPION STINGS,
THE MOSQUITO DELIGHTS YOU BY BUZZING HIS WINGS.
THE SAND BURRS PREVAIL, SO DO THE ANTS,
AND THOSE THAT SIT DOWN NEED HALF SOLES ON THEIR PANTS.

THE DEVIL THEN SAID THAT THROUGHOUT THE LAND
HE'D MANAGE TO KEEP UP THE DEVIL'S OWN BRAND,
AND ALL WOULD BE MAVERICKS UNLESS THEY BORE
THE MARKS AND SCRATCHES AND BITES BY THE SCORE.
THE HEAT IN THE SUMMER IS A HUNDRED AND TEN,
TOO HOT FOR THE DEVIL AND TOO HOT FOR MEN.

THE WILD BOAR ROAMS THROUGH THE BLACK CHAPARRAL,
IT'S A HELL OF A PLACE HE HAS FOR HELL;
THE RED PEPPER GROWS BY THE BANK OF THE BROOK,
THE MEXICANS USE IT IN ALL THAT THEY COOK.
JUST DINE WITH A GREASER AND THEN YOU WILL SHOUT,
"I'VE A HELL ON THE INSIDE AS WELL AS WITHOUT."

You aren't supposed to talk about Texas in any language other than Spanish.

Well, it is in its own category... though its more likely to be considered 'south' than southwest. Cotton (cattle didn't come until later and oil was much later) was big in Texas, and of course slavery and the proximity of the state to the rest of the south put the state in the confederacy. But keep in mind that it was only 35 years prior that Texas was an independent nation (1835-45), 40 years prior Texas was a Mexican state (1821-1835), and a Spanish colony only 50 years prior.

More importantly though, the state won its independence in part because of people like David Crockett that believed in the Jacksonian ideal that its freedom is worth sacrificing one's self. Of course, Crockett and Travis and Bowie also believed that Texas would make them rich IF they lived through the war. Idealism isn't particularly pure in their case.

Regardless, Texas was first Indian, then French, then Spanish, then Mexican, then Texan, then American, then Confederate, then American again. All within a few hundred years. Texans who fought in the civil war could have had grand parents that fought against the Mexican army, and great grand parents fighting against the Spanish.

Yes, Texans often come across as irrationally proud of their state, but IMO most of that is because Texas's history has forced a sense of identity. When I moved to Wisconsin, I found out that most Americans didn't realize that the "Don't Mess with Texas" slogan was an anti-littering campaign... I've met many people who thought it was just some Texas pride motto. Heh... it might be true in a sense, but really it was just an attempt to get people to put their trash in a trash can.

What was this thread about again?

Not really. Without Texas and Texas based companies CA would be crippled with not enough energy.

CA has a larger economy, but without Texas(and to a lesser extent the rest of the US) they would be relatively crippled because they dont produce that much energy, nor do they have the oil refining capabilities to survive.

Texas is the only state in the union that could be self sufficent.

texas in itself has more military bases, oil refineries, telecom industries, farming, than any state. And if you google it you will find out that texas can be legally split into 4 seperate states at any time.

I had no idea it was an anti-trash slogan. I don't think anyone I know (other than perhaps Texans) that.
