Causing more pain to more people really doesn't help anything, regardless of what the person feeling the pain may have done. The punishment should be beneficial - whether to the perpetrator or society as a whole, or both.

I don't know that there's anything that can be done for someone who kills babies to help them become a productive member of society, but certainly torturing that person isn't going to benefit society any more than just locking her up in jail.

Locking her up in jail doesn't benefit society one bit. Killing the b1tch, will be the inexpensive way to go about it and maybe, just maybe, it will prevent some other b1tch from doing the same.

We've established that she's nuts, psycho, crazy, etc. What makes you think that executing her will make other people who are crazy, nuts, and psycho from doing the same thing? Deterrence works on the principle that when you establish that A->B, and B is something unpleasant, you refrain from doing A. In other words, it requires someone who is reasonable. Persons who slam their children into pavements could hardly be considered reasonable...so why would deterrence work? It doesn't.

Edit: Death penalty trials are incredibly complex, incredibly expensive, and incredibly time-consuming. You usually have to deal with multiple levels of appeal, etc. It's generally accepted that life imprisonment IS cheaper in the long run, usually also because the immate is put to work at some task.

just because she murdered her child doesnt mean she is crazy. some people are just evil, period.

i say public execution. drawn and quartered, preferably. brutal crimes deserve brutal punishments.

Question: I just saw on the news preview that "onlookers looked on in horror"

Why didnt anyone try to stop her? People need to take action instead of sitting back and hoping someone else will!

this is why abortion is good. it gives people a chance to not have to bring unwanted children in to this world

I can see the defense already:

"Your honor, my client was frantically trying to dislodge a plastic toy from her child's throat. What kind of society could possible frown upon a citizen's attempt at saving their child's life?"

It's still killing a child. But that's another heated topic already hashed out over and over I don't want to get into.

that's just human nature. The more people that are in a crowd the lesser the chance that action will be taken against the problem. Its a diffusion of responsibility. Its completely wrong, but its not uncommon for groups of people to help out one person. people will just think "well they're not doing anything"

and about the mother, i hope that b1tch doesn't plead insanity. no man, we should throw that stuff out when it comes to killing babies. I don't care if you hullicinated and thought it was a lion attacking you, i dont' freaking care! like that stupid mother that pleaded insanity for smashing her children's heads with a rock, wtf?

Yeah, and no one would have cared if she had murdered her child a year ago but now it's 'wrong' because people can see it.

I'll one-up you on this, how about we sterilize *everybody* (literally or politically - a la China, but with a lower limit) until and unless they meet certain age & IQ requirements? There are places where you need a license to own a pet, but any idiot can breed, and most do. Personally would like to see this woman in particular burned to within an inch of her life and left to die slowly of infection in solitary confinement.

The punishment should be beneficial - whether to the perpetrator or society as a whole, or both.

The benefit of punishment should be to make someone think twice about committing the infraction again. This is among the reasons that I think executions should be public, in all their ugliness. People should be made aware that there are atrocities that society will not tolerate. If you choose to engage in criminal behavior that is this abhorrent, you should expect that you are going to suffer the dire consequences.

I think for crap like this we need to bring back the rack and other such devices.

I have read about some devices that cause a LOT of pain and keep the people alive for days.

What if the torture makes someone else think twice before commiting the same crime?

Kill them quickly, and tell the public how horrendous their death was.

I can't even imagine what's reasonable punishment, but a good first step would be tying her tubes, at her expense, and I am not joking about that. I'd think that's something we can all agree upon, though I know many people wouldn't. I also would support castration for repeat-offender rapists. I suppose that really changes the correctional system in some major ways though.

I find some inconsistencies in the rationalizing of abortion, but even advocates of it do not condone murder of a born individual (unless maybe he's an abortion doctor :Q).
