What is spam?

I was thinking about this as I get closer to releasing a software product.

Is it spam if I find a website in my area that I think would be interested in a product. They have their email address displayed in the 'contact us' page and I send them an email suggesting my product.

Is That SPAM? If not, how is it any different than those jacka$$es that harvest emails off of websites?

you are selling an item it seems..... so you wouldnt have to put "advertisement" in the subject if you are selling to a company



i would put something like "business inquiry - software sales" or something like that

you arent spamming if you are only sending to one or a few businesses

LOL good input so far guys, however I will be sending to 50-100 businesses. This is a legitimate product that their businesses will be able to use, not some get rich scheme, etc..

If it is a good ligitimate product, what is wrong with making a phone call and talking in person? Or what is wrong with mailing a pamphlet that clearly shows your advantages? Email like what you are discribing probably will be deleted without being read by 99 of those 100 companies.

i also consider door to door salesmen, telemarketer calls, and junk snail mail to be spam
