Christians Try To Censor Georgia School's Reading List

POSTED: 8:13 a.m. EST March 17, 2004
CARTERSVILLE, Ga. -- Some Christian parents in Georgia want a bevy of books removed from their local schools' reading list.

Three parents with the group Crusaders for Christ told members of the Bartow County Board of Education that several books are too offensive for students to be reading.

The group's leader, the Rev. Dwight Holcomb, told board members, "You're going to answer to God Almighty for your decision."

Among the books the Crusaders for Christ want banned are "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck, "The Martian Chronicles" by Ray Bradbury and "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee.

County committees had deemed all of the books appropriate, but committee members will now consider whether to repeal their decision.

It's always funny when these die-hard 'Christians' actually have so little faith in that that they feel the need to meddle in these matters themselves.

They are like communist in that they love to control people and do things in the interest of others without asking or allowing people a choice in the matter.

I am about as a big of Bible thumper you will find......... but banning books is bad news,

however deciding what goes on a school reading list can be an different matter, certain books are age appropriate.

Why the heck would they want to ban to Kill a Mockingbird?

Because it claims that blacks are not inferior to whites...who the bible clearly says are. 😉

so shooting retarded men in the back of the head without a trial is awesome?

sure its *justice* but executing the mentally retarded has been banned, resulting in many morons trying to pull the "temporary insanity" excuse

The Bible makes no such claim. ALL MEN ARE EQUAL BEFORE God

Unless you're not an Israelite.

Moreover of the children of the strangers that do sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that are with you, which they begat in your land: and they shall be your possession. And ye shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit them for a possession; they shall be your bondmen for ever

(Leviticus 25:44-46).

Uh, nice try with Lee's book, but no cigar. Try language-sex and four letter words, oh my! 🙂

Race is really not a legitimate beef (neither are the others, except for the age of the intended readers) and if they pulled it for that reason they'd all get hung on the lawn of the nearest Federal Courthouse. 🙂 Which should happen anyway if they do pull it....probably. 🙂

Anyway, it's obvious most of you haven't read it. Sheezh....

The high school production of "To Kill a Mockingbird" was protested in my town because of the word "n*gger." I don't think you have to be a religious nut to protest something.

Huckleberry Finn was pulled from the shelves here in the Soviet of washington, they replaced it with Victoria Holt . Go Dems!

Banning "To kill a Mockingbird" and "Of Mice and Men"?? Wtf?? Those books are classic. They are very rich in thier content as far as books go. I read those books in HS and sadly to say, banning these now because of some pc bullsh!t or the "we're offended" excuse is out of line. Heck, I'm a christian myself and even I see that such a move would be to the detriment of school age kids.
