what is SLI? in what condition I need it?

You need it if you want to have a very high end graphics card solution, or in some cases, people use it as an upgrade solution.

For example: You can only afford one video card now, but in the future you wish to add a second card for better performance rather than selling the first card & buying a new one.

Most people don't recommend it unless you have money to burn &/or want the best.
 
Do you have to have it to play the latest games? No.
Do you get some extra performance from running dual cards in SLI? Yes.
 
you don't need it ! just buy a 7800GT and it will do you good untill late next year then buy something like G80 or R600
