What is Shadow Process and How Does It Work??

We just got done doing a server migration and experienced some unexpectedly long downtime. A friend of mine mentioned something called "shadow process" afterwards in regards to zero downtime during migration.

Anyone have any experience or expertise with shadow process?? Any comments and insight welcome.

Perhaps he's referring to Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Technology? It sounds like something that would fit your problem.

Thanks. That sounds alot like it. I guess that....while it would allow us not to hbe down....it would force us to go to read-only mode, since allowing new data to be written would be counter-productive to our site. That wouldn't be a bad thing. Beats the heck out of being down altogether.

I wonder if this technology is available between two Linux machines, since we run off RedHat.
