Herdez brand "salsa casera" -- medium -- is pretty good, and is probably at your common grocery store (safeway, albertsons, etc.)

It has none of the tomato paste taste that most american salsas have.

Mexican grocery stores would definately have it, or possibly even better "real" mexican salsa.

The stuff in the refrigerated section tends to taste like salty, diced, bland tomatoes to me -- with no flavor other than salt and cilantro.

Hrm. No real salsa I've had contains tomato paste. Pico de gallo is just fresh, chopped ingredients like others have listed. For salsa you always cook the ingredients first.

"Picante sauce" is just a hot or spicy sauce made from finely pureed peppers, tomatoes, and that kind of thing. It may contain tomato paste, I guess.
