What is S.M.A.R.T?

Today I started my computer up and before Windows loaded up it said something liek S.M.A.R.T has detected an error in your hard drive in IDE 3 that could corrupt your hard disk and that you should back up now.

Whats an IDE 3? also is this something serious that I should start backing everything up?

It's a system for diagnosing hard drive problems. It could mean your drive is about to die.

IDE 3 is 3rd device on IDE... Most likely secondary master.
Although, new motherboards sometimes have advanced features liek mixing up IDE and SATA controllers, and so a primary master on IDE could end up being like.. drive 5. So it basically depends on the motherboard that you are using.
