What is RxBufferCount ??

In Windows 9x/ME, under Control Panel > Network > Netgear FA311 PCI adapter > Properties > Advanced, I see a RxBufferCount property with a default value of 40. This value can be changed from 8 to 128 in multiples of 8. Any ideas what changing this value lower or higher would do? I can't seem to find any documentation in Netgear's manual, FAQ's, website, etc.

My configuration:
Windows ME
Netgear FA311 NIC (w/ v1.8 drivers)
