My niece that these Internet devices (tablets) for her 2 children called Nabi 2.

She is asking me about doing some type of RE-ROOTING of these devices. Says that it can allow them to have more applications, games, etc. for the kids.

First is this re-rooting something that is supported by the maker of these devices.

Secondly, are these instructions / procedures that I am seeing for performing this re-rooting found on the Internet to be trusted ?

Is it likely that trying to perform this re-rooting can destroy and/or damage these devices ?

Thanks.

I made a quick trip to XDA Developers site, only to find that their forums are, at the moment, off-line for maintenance. None-the-less, I did a quick search on their public facing portal & found 1 link to the Nabi 2 dated 10/7/12 entitled; Nabi 2 Tablet for Kids Gets Root, Recovery and Gapps. The link is: https://www.xda-developers.com/android/nabi-2-tablet-for-kids-gets-root-recovery-and-gapps/

I'm not as majorly geekish as my inner geek is crying out to be, but I've spent some time on the XDA forums & if it's possible to root a device of any type, you can find out how to do it there. If it's absolutely impossible to root a device, give them 3 or 4 days.

As to whether or not rooting is manufacturer supported, it's probably a case of "Do NOT remove this tag from mattress under penalty of law!" kind of things, but just whose mattress is it anyway? Roam around the inter-webz to see what you can find out, but XDA is the place to start.

Q - First is this re-rooting something that is supported by the maker of these devices?

No.

Q - Is it likely that trying to perform this re-rooting can destroy and/or damage these devices?

Yes there is a probability that the Device would be damaged or dimmed "dead".

Q - Secondly, are these instructions / procedures that I am seeing for performing this re-rooting found on the Internet to be trusted ?

As anything done unofficially by self proclaimed "expert" volunteers might or might not be trusted most of the time there is no way to know until you try.

As an example let use Windows registry hacking. There is always the possibility that something would end up wrong. The difference is that we can always erase the main drive and re-Install Windows. However, when it comes to a lot of the "New Toys", tablets, phones etc. there is No flexibility in hardware fixing, or and re-installation, many times people end up with a dead Device in thier hands.

The Nabi 2 is a kid tablet. If you want to try rooting make sure that you have a plan and the tools/software to reset and revive the device if something goes wrong.

I have done some further research on rooting or re-rooting this Nabi 2 device.

At the following link it talks about going to the "everything nabi google" website for instructions on installing certain Google play store & related applications. I take it that according to the warning NOTES (as shown following) that these procedures are NOT the same as REROOTING the Nabi 2 device because it talks about certain video/TV/movie functions not being able to be used on the Nabi after these procedures are followed. Or am I wrong and will this everything nabi google process accomplish exactly the same thing as rerooting the Nabi 2 device as I subsequently describe below.

http://everythingnabi.blogspot.com/2012/08/googlie-booglie.html

NOTE: The Google Play Store app is included in this list but it only allows you to purchase Books, Magazines, Music and buy or rent Movies for streaming or download. It also permits in-app purchases and app license checks. It does not allow for the purchase, downloading or upgrading of Android apps.

NOTE: Google Play Movies & TV app will not currently stream or download movies onto the nabi 2 Tablet. Initial testing indicates that it does work on the nabi Jr. Tablet.

Then I also found procedures for actually REROOTING the Nabi 2 device at the following link.

http://mywebslave.blogspot.com/2012/09/install-android-sdk-via-ppa.html

My question is, will following the processes given at the just above mywebslave link give the same results as following the processes given at the everything nabi google link ????

I am trying to understand what it is that the REROOTING (as opposed to just doing the mywebslave processes) are going to accomplish. Is rerooting in essence installing a completely new operating system with administrative rights similar to the superuser account rights on a Linux operating system desktop computer onto the Nabi 2 tablet that is going to allow both the MOMMY/DADDY/ADMINISTRATOR users and also the children's accounts that would be setup on the Nabi 2 to ALL perform all of the functions that would be available from the Google Playstore applications ? And if so, would it be desireable to possibly have the children using this tablet to have OPEN access to all of the functions that might be available ???

My niece has had some of her friends with children telling her about rerooting the Nabi devices for their children but I just want to make sure that I and my niece are both correctly understanding what it is that she is going to be accomplishing if I try to either run the mywebslave installation procedures or the everything nabi google procedures on her children's Nabi 2 devices.

Please educate me !!!!

Thanks.
