RAID, Redundant Array of Independent Disks. It actually have three modes depending on how you want to use it. It helps either by speeding disk access (called Striping, splitting data access, read and write, to an array of disks) or by duplicating data (on another disk) which serves as an instant back up and/or a combination of both. RAID is a must for servers although they are now becoming popular for general use because of lower HD prices. You need at least two disks to use RAID.:)
