What is Progressive scanning?? (DVD's)

What exactly is progressive scanning, with reference to DVD players... more importantly, do I need it?
I know it's required for HDTV's but I have a conventional Hitachi with S-vid and Composite inputs
and 800 lines resolution.
I wanted to but a cheap but reliable (and feature filled, MP3 decoder... not asking for too much) can anyone recommend one?
Also, I noticed some DVD players have an optical connection and a "coaxial" connection. What are these used for? (sound I think) but where do you hook them up? Are they or any benefit?

Thanks for any input.

this link tells you a little about what progressive scan is. you don't need it if you have a "conventional" tv

as far as optical vs coaxial, they are the 2 options you have for delivering 5.1 channel audio to your surround receiver

optical uses an optical cable and requires a receiver with an optical input. coaxial uses basically a single rca cable to transmit the data digitally to a receiver (which must obviously have a coaxial digital input)

basically, depends on what your receiver has for inputs. if it has both , then you have a choice to make . coaxial digital cables are cheaper, and since it's digital, it shouldn't really matter how you send the signal. i use optical, though, cause i think it's "cooler" to know you have an optical fiber cable behind your stereo gear 🙂
