Ok, my friend is telling me about www.prepaidlegal.com, and I'm not quite sure what it is and how it can help me. Can anyone explain to me more about what the program does or any comments/opinions about it?

Anything in specific you dont understand? Seems fairly straightforward to me, its an insurance plan for legal fees.

?Legal Service Plans - Pre-Paid Legal offers Legal Service Plans to provide access to justice for middle income individuals and families. Our plans are designed with the cost-conscious consumer in mind. Have you ever wanted legal advice on a credit matter? Have you ever wanted legal assistance with the purchase of a home? Have you ever needed legal services in writing or revising your Will? For just pennies a day, you can protect you and your family's legal rights. To see how a Pre-Paid Legal plan can benefit you,

My g/f's dad had a bumper sticker with "Prepaid Legal". For some odd reason, I thought it was making fun of cops.

You pay between 12 and 30 dollars a month and in return you get a bunch of different things, depending on which state you're in. Unlimited free phone consultation, like, 70 hours of trial and trial prep time, free document review and preparing...25% off other things, 24hr assistance (read, get out of jail free cards), bunch of other stuff. Overall it's a great service, many companies are starting to carry it as part of standard benefits packages.

It's also a multi-level marketing thing, but it's done pretty quietly and in the background. Lot of money to be made...the movers right now are turning 2-10k a month.

It's really a good service to have, especially in today's sue happy world.

You get what you pay for (especially with lawyers) but I would be a little hesitant to rely on this service for serious matters but they should do fine with a simple will of a traffic violation.

A pre-paid legal service is one of the benefits at the company I work for, though I've never used it.

I wonder if they do speeding tickets...

People expect more out of these plans than they will get. Generally, these plans will only help you out if there is a serious criminal matter against you. They don't usually cover any civil matters, so you can't expect to use the service to sue someone else. (or be safe from being sued yourself) And, misdemeanors and traffic citations are usually exempt too. The only thing I can see useful is the legal advice, and wills, and I don't think that's worth the monthly fee.

It's provided as a benefit by many companies because it's so cheap, and they give you a sense that they are providing for you something substantial. I tend to lump pre-paid legal in the same category as credit insurance and mortgage life insurance - it's set up so companies rarely have to pay out. That's one reason it is so profitable.

Actually they will help with traffic violations. In fact, they will consult with you on anything, no matter what. They will do the paperwork, no matter what. They also give you your hours of pre trial and trial representation per year (up to 70ish depending on state) no matter what. On all other services they give you 25% off. It is true however that their services are limited with regards to civil matters...but you still get the 25% off.

As for their quality they are almost always among the top law firms in a state. Their reviews are widely available for study. They can do this because the monthly retainer to the law firm is the combined total monthly payments of all persons in the state. In Oklahoma for instance this amounts to a little over 1.4 million dollars a month in retainer fees to the law firm. At that cost law ffirms will do ANYTHING to help you out.

It is also interesting to note that many countries have been moving toward prepaid legal for many years. I believe it's Germany that has an 82% participation rate.

Well it sounds like a very good deal then. I must correct comments earlier. Last lawyer cost me $350 for a speeding ticket. The same price as the ticket but no going to court and more importantly it was thown out. Wonderful corrupt system we live in:( show me the money and you get off.

Let me correct something I said earlier, about them helping with the ticket:

They don't 'fix' tickets. But they are lawyers and will answer questions, prepare documents etc. If you're guilty, you're guilty. I didn't want to make it sound like they OJ miracle workers. Their best feature is really being there to answer questions and do the documents. If it costs you on top of that, it's gonna cost you something anyway, and with this you get a discount.

Also, each state is different. You have to check with a prepaid legal rep to learn more.
