I'm having problems with choppy video that I suspect is being caused by something running in the background. Other than the normal things to do, like shutting down any un-necessary programs, disabling virus program and zonealarm, is there any way to see what might be causing this problem? The choppy video shows up in half-life and while running the DirectX 8.1 diagnostics, and watching the box spin around with the same choppiness that I see in half-life. I've got all the latest drivers installed (lan, video, sound). Thanks for help!!:frown:

If you have Microsoft Office installed, look for msfindfast as starting up under your .cfg files (look in START>RUN>msconfig). It indexes your entire hard drive to RAM for faster file searching in the START>FIND box every half hour or so (sometimes even more often). This causes extreme slowdown, and reduces performance even after it finishes each time it scans. It's an abhorrent monster that used to plague me with similar symptoms to yours, too :(.

I'm running Win98 without Office. One other thing I didn't mention in my original post is that I don't see any hard drive activity. I also have my graphics settings, in Device Manager, set to full, and the system is set as a network server, even though it isn't.
