PCI Express x16 slot just refers to the amount of bandwidth the slot can provide in each direction. So each slot has that bandwidth up and then the exact same bandwidth down.

PCIe x1 = 250MB/s
PCIe x4 = 1000MB/s = (1GB/s)
PCIe x8 = 2000MB/s = (2GB/s)
PCIe x16 = 4000MB/s = (4GB/s)
PCIe x32 = 8000MB/s = (8GB/s) I don't know any motherboards that have a single x32 slot yet, but it is in the reference papers.

Damn this crap mouse I have at work!

The mouse gets jittery and hard to control when you try to run a 24 pipe video card in a PCIe x16 slot becasue there isn't enough bandwidth left for the mouse. :)

The more you talk to someone about computer hardware the more you realize their reading comprehension, or general knowledge, is severely lacking. Comprende'?

I busted a EB Games store manager acting like he knew a lot about computers by bringing up the Xbox360. It didn't take long before I found out he was so good at CounterStrike that he got banned from every server he played in for suspicion of cheating. I consider this to be the nerd equivalent of the ex-high school jocks who say they had scholarship offers & such nonsense. You just have to giggle a little after you have walked far away from either of these types of people, because both will stand by their lie until the end.

x32 is almost exclusively planned to be used for high end server raid...

It hasnt been implemented anywhere as far as i know.

I call you a bad friend then. I fully expect my friends to call me on bullshat, and also not allow me to wallow in ignorance. No longer necessary, as I've gained wisdom and maturity enough to avoid such behavior. Of course, I have 2 life-long friends I have known for over 30yrs, and they are like family. I might not expect an acquaintance to be so honest, but a friend? I'd be bent if they didn't look out for me like that!

But that is just what I mean brudda :) Friends shouldn't have to be politically correct with each other. I'd of told him he was being a dumbass, and took the 10 minutes out of my life to show him the spot the card occupies in the vid card hierarchy. I understand you are probably just the kinder, gentler, type though. I'm the brutal honesty is both one of my best assests and worst liabilities type.

Well, I am making fun of him now. Actually, I called him everything I can think of. You name it, he got called it. See, that website is a Clan website for Doom 3, and now he wants me out of the Clan because of this. I just guess he cannot handle being wrong. LMAO

Sounds like a great "friend" to me.

You're friend knows NOTHING about computers. And to be honest, anyone who spouts off like an expert when they have no clue as too what they are talking about is a bit of an ass as well.

Seems like Greenman had him nailed a few pages ago.

Your friend is definitely an idiot, PCI-E 16x means it has sixteen bi-directional data lanes, not that it can only support cards with sixteen pipelines. I was using an X800GTO² on my PCI-E board before I got my X1800XT, those cards have twelve pipelines until you unlock them to sixteen, and as many have said here you can get cards like the 6600GT in PCI-E flavour which have much less than sixteen pipelines (eight, if I recall correctly.)

well, actually. what the ( friend ) meant was, that if you have a card with more than 16 pipes...like a NV 7800 Gt ( 20 ) or GTX ( 24 ) then those cards will disable themselves and run at 16 pipes. lol.

That's even worse, lol!
