You will need mail sever software?. There are hundreds of them, mdaemon, post office, exchange, all kinds of unix based software. Then you will need proper dns entries for the mail server i.e a valid mail exchanger record.

What OS? I tried something called Argosoft Mail server awhile back. It ran in any Win32 OS.

Mail Exchanger.

What is it? How to setup one? Any tutorials/information?

Basically all I want is to setup a server for myself and a few friends so that we can have our own 'names@xxxxxxxxx.com'

Again...what OS are you running??? If you're running Win32, I recommend BIND for Win32 to setup your DNS (ie. domain name, mail exchange) records.

I plan to run this on a Win2000 SP2. Can I have some links as to where I can read more? I am already hosting an apache site on the same system. I want to know how it is different to host an Email Server.

I prefer MetaIP for DNS with windows. BIND is good also but i think MetaIP is more easy to manage.

Why don't you search for these programs we're telling you about? They come with instructions on how to setup and manage them...

why the hell wont you tell US what OS you are using? but no matter what OS you will need some kinda DNS server with the correct MX records. And you will need a mail server of some description(I-Mail, Exchange, etc.)

Bind in win2k? Geesus no, not for a novice. Use DNS Services built into win2k server, works very very well and is a piece of cake to setup as long as you have a basic schmick about what DNS is.
