What is my freaking problem w/gainward ti200!!??!!

Up front here is what I am running:

P3 733 w/384 mb pc133 ram
ASUS CUV4X mobo
SB Live!
Maxtor 20g hd
17" Sony 200sx
Gainward Geforce 3 ti200 /450
win98se or winXP Home

Here is my problem. I am upgrading, or so I had hoped, from a 3d Prophet 2mx to a Gainward g3 ti200. Never had this many problems with an upgrade of any kind before. My system with my 3d prophet was stable as a rock and ran everything fine in 98 and XP. I have 2d and 3d issues.

3D: To many problems crashing. I have tried detonator 21.81, 21.85, 22.40, 23.10, and 23.11 with both win98se and winXP. Quake 3 runs perfectly, but Unreal Tournament crashes and burns. Both 3d mark 2000 and 2001 crash shortly after any benchmark or demo starts. Many of my games will not run or crash during insallation like MS Train Simulator and Unreal Tournament. I heard some games would not work in XP which I can handle, but not working in win98 is a different story.

2D: Not that great of picture. 1024x768 @ 75 hz or anything else @ 75hz produces little micro refresh wavies on text, lines, and borders. Best I can describe them is like little flowing lights like on movie theater walkways that follow one another. They are not really noticeable until I start looking close at the monitor. I know this is not normal, and it drives me crazy. With the monitor at 85hz the wavies are gone but the image bleeds or is blury in some areas. Have had these problems in both win98se and XP.

I have clean installed win98 and XP multiple times with not much success. Is this a detonator problem, video card problem, or was I an idiot and screwed something else up that I don't know about. I had some of the same problems with a leadtek g3 ti 200 in 3d but it ran through 3dmark 2000 and 2001 in XP and I had no 2d issues at all. I have used the latest via 4in1 drivers in some of my installs but don't they get erased when you do a clean install so there is not an issue?

I am fed up with this and am about to return it and stay with my prophet. I don't want to but I can't take all this frustration any longer. I hate having an unstable system and I want to play some of my old win98 games.

Do I have some kind of compatibility issue here? I have noticed some improvements to varying degrees depending on the detonator version, but the 2d thing is a constant that I don't think should be there especiall when gainwards are suppost to have good 2D. Or do I have a defective card?

Please respond with any ideas or comments.

Were you using Nvtweak, or some other sort of overclocking utility with your old card? These are seperate from the regular drivers and remain when you remove the old ones. They can cause lots of problems. But then again you said you did fresh installs, but are we talking about after a re-format of the hard disk?

I have formated the disk each time I have done a fresh install. I have not used any tweaking utilities. Nothing has been overclocked. I just got my RMA approval from Newegg, they won't even charge me a restocking fee for the return. Unless there is some miracle fix out there that can help me solve the problem I am going to return it. I don't want to return it if I can fix the problem, but if I have to return it I am not sure if I will get another one or even another brand.

I hope you aren't using Expertool. It messes things up. Uninstall it and just use coolbits.

Other than that... given your motherboard... try disabling fastwrites (doesn't do anything anyway and tends to cause a fair amount of performance issues). Your AGP aperature is too large. Turn it down. Also turn off vbios shadow and vcache.

There is a new 4in1 AGP driver out specifically for XP. If you don't have it... go get it. 4.10 I think.
