Assuming you run the dishwasher with a full load every week, also using the heater to dry the dishes. vs 2 paper plates 2 sets of plasticware and ... 3 or 4 paper or plastic cups per day. Which is more environmentally friendly? additional dimension: which is more economically friendly?

I believe that it would be easier to treat the water than to reuse the waste.

Edit: strictly my uninformed opinion

I dunno. If the dishwasher is only used once a week, I suspect that is better, but even if it was run Daily it might still be better.

The problem with the question, IMO, is that it's an Apples/Oranges comparison. Many things cause harm to the Environment and Where and How Much they affect the Environment varies greatly as well.

satisfying than looking down after lunch and seeing nothing but a table .

To answer this question, one would have to calculate the total effect on the environment in each case, including the one-time effects (i.e., production of dishware) and the incremental effects (buying new plates each week, running the dishwasher, etc.). I suspect the answer isn't nearly as a cut and dry as many may think.

Dishwasher, because of the environmental impact of transporting all that crap all the way to your home (manufacturer to distributor to grocery store to your home) and then to the dump (your home to the garbage truck to the sorting facility to the recycling center or dump).

don't forget that even though trees can be regrown, everyone switching to paper plates would have a huge impact on deforestation

dishwasher hands down, especially when its electricity source doesn't have to be detrimental to the environment

Edible ... mmm, eating off your SO's body...

Yeah I'm thinking edible panties. That way you get the meat holder and the meal all in one. ;)

The detergent is really bad for the Chesapeake bay, though. At least, that's what local TV tells me. High phosphate content. Phosphate is latin for "clean" though.
