what is meant by academic edition?

I am looking at purchasing winxp pro on ebay but it says it is the academic edition. Does this mean it has things disabled or anything other than a price reduction. Is it right for me to receive it since I am not a student? LMK.

AFAIK that person is not allowed to sell academic versions to anyone. When I was in school, the academic versions on MS software was basically just the CD (no box or manuals) and we had to sign something saying that you can only use this for personal use as a student, cannot sell it, blah blah.

It means you're supposed to be a student (or possibly teacher) to buy it. Typically the licenses for acadmic software prohibit them from being used in a business.

However, all academic software I've used is functinoally identical to the regular version.

Academic editions are for use by students only and usually are not for resale. Almost all of them are full versions, the only ones I know of that aren't are some of the high end CAD programs.

You CANNOT resell academic versions of software, and they can't be retailed to people who aren't students, staff or faculty of an approved educational institution. It's illegal for you to buy that software if you're not affiliated with a university.
