Hello guys,

I own EPOX 8K7A motherboard (AMD 761 chipset + VIA South Bridge). I want to purchase 512MB Kingston HyperX DDR333 and use AMD XP 1700+ TBred B processor. My mobo supports 12.5 multiplier at max. I have read some reports that some BIOS updates use 13x instead of 12.5 (I could not verify these reports). Is 12.5 or 13 x 166 MHz maximum CPU clock speed? What do I have to do with this CPU to unlock it - connecting L1 bridges (I guess it does not come unlocked)? I realize that 166 will overclock my AGP bus to 4x83 MHz.

Where is the best place to buy AMD XP 1700+ TBread B for least (this is challenging otherwise I know excaliburpc.com and gameve.com) either OEM or retail? Seems that AMD is using better CPU for retail versions (I guess to make sure that they get least amount of returns).

:) It doesn't appear the CPU support PDF link works but as you say these mobos were NOT designed for fast FSB speeds, anything over 150/300mhz is seriously pushing it. Since most XP1700+ TbredB are VERY happy up to 200/400FSB and to XP2700+ speeds (or beyond) it might make sense to finally bite the bullet and upgrade the mobo as it is VERY likely to seriously hold you back. A KT400 or SiS746FX solution are VERY cost effective, add in some PC2700 or ideally PC3200 and you're set for fantastic gains in perf .... you should still get something for your old kit too! I haven't heard that the retail CPUs are in any way better at all, quite the reverse from what I've heard as it's far harder to ensure the core etc. Even if your RAM isn't limiting you should probably only expect to take an XP1700+ TbredB to 12.5x150=1.88ghz (just over XP2200+). You could try hard modding the bridges to set a different multiplier (like 15x) IF your mobo can handle these (the PDF should say you can take at least an XP2400+). All TbredB are already unlocked (so don;t waste time with L1), it's your dumb-ass mobo which will limit you to 12.5x max courtesy of 5bit FID.

I was able to hit 148 MHz using 266DDR Crucial memory. I believe CPU could not handle more (Palomino) and I did not increase CPU voltage. I was using Volcano 7 (now I have AX-7 with YSTech var. speed fan and I am so happy). My sound card did not like overclocking over 138MHz so I was forced to run at 133MHz. I believe that once I was able to run 9.5 x 166 on my system but I could not test stability of the system for long (I was not interested much in it since I want to get TBred B). I guess time will show how good the chances are to overclock this mobo.
