What is max TV resolution?

Well I'd like to know what is the highest resolution I can push the normal non-HDTV TV to? My current TV does 640x480, and when i put it to 800x600 it does it but I'm missing buch of the pixels on the sides and stuff. I'm thinking of geting a new TV Sony Triniton 20' and I'd like to know how far could I push that one?

Wouldn't that make the tv a strange size? (not 4:3), or is that pal. I thought 720x480 was dvd resolution before the image is processed.

I know HDTV has higher resolution but the sony TV I'm geting supports digital tv signals and analog signals It doesn't make it HDTV but it makes it closer to it than the other TVs around. I'm not sure if it will make difference in resolution. All i need is 800x600 so i could do some work on it without being scared of huge letters.

720x480 is DVD standard resolution.

That's most likely the fault of your TV output device or its adjustment, not the TV. Although some cheap TV's overscan by a lot, so it might be the TV if only the sides are cut off.

If you are using the video-out from a graphics card, the resolution you have selected for the display and the effective resolution sent to the TV are 2 different things. The actual picture resolution being sent to the TV is probably the same regardless of what your desktop resolution is set to - one just has more stuff crammed into the same number of scan lines - which is probably about 300 if you are using composite outputs, or around 400 if you are using s-video.

Highest I've seen is 800x600. Works fine on my Wega 37"...looks pretty darn nice, actually. 🙂

I should run my comp off my 52" sometime. Can you imagine that, 800x600 on a 52"?! The recycle bin will be as big as my head!!
